Tigers Stay On Top; Pattonsburg On the Rise

#1 Worth County 70, Bedford 12
The question was whether the teams down south could measure up to the teams north of the Iowa border. Worth County responded in a big way with its 70-12 win over Bedford. The Bulldogs had a stout front line, and the muddy field conditions caused a lot of fumbles and bad snaps. And Caleb Parman could not plant and cut like he can on a dry field. But the Tigers took advantage of numerous bad snaps and miscues against a short-handed Bulldog squad. Andrew Alarcon was the quickest man on the field, shooting the gap to throw someone for a loss on defense and breaking loose several times on offense. Bryant McCord added two long touchdowns, while Jaxon Anderson recovered two fumbles and Isaac Alarcon got a pick six for the defense.

Braymer has already played Stanberry and Pattonsburg. Friday’s game between Worth County and Braymer will be a good opportunity to see how Worth County measures up against those two squads.

#2 Stanberry 58, Albany 20
Stanberry maintains its #2 position, but Albany went the distance against their Gentry County rivals. For Albany, Dawson Butterfield ran 27 times for 150 yards against a tough Stanberry front line. Tryce Floyd ran 14 times for 44 yards. Floyd led the team defensively with 10 tackles for Albany.
Braymer has now played Stanberry and Pattonsburg, and both schools thumped the Bobcats by similar margins. The question is whether the Panthers can overcome the jitters that come with playing a perennial powerhouse team like Stanberry or Worth County.

#3 King City 86, Northwest Hughesville 22
King City had little trouble disposing of Hughesville, putting the Mustangs away early in the third quarter. Hughesville elected to play on, and King City put on two more tallies to account for the final margin.

Hughesville showed they were able to move the ball against King City through the air. Connor Tichenor completed only 12 of his 31 passes, but had 208 passing yards for a 17.3 yards per catch ratio. Turnovers and the lack of a running game were their undoing. They ran 31 times for -26 yards, which includes yards lost on sacks. And they threw three picks and fumbled away the ball two more times. Rylan Chamberlin had 7 catches for 160 yards.

For King City, Collin Breckinridge put up more strong numbers, completing 14 of his 18 pass attempts for 113 yards. He ran 9 times for another 155 yards. Jacob Moen had 6 carries for 71 yards, while Parker Muff had 9 carries for 58 yards. Kagan Barnett had 7 catches for 53 yards, and Hunter Abney had 5 catches for 52 yards. Defensively, King City had four sacks, five quarterback hurries, and ten pass deflections. Hunter Abney had five pass deflections.

#4 Mound City 66, Stewartsville 0
Stewartsville had every reason to think they were going somewhere after their impressive 50-0 win over North/West Nodaway last week after winning cliffhangers against them the last two years. But this time, Mound City trounced them, ending the game at halftime.

Stewartsville quarterback Cain Rush was impressive in week one, but Mound City held him to 8 pass completions in 36 attempts for just 83 yards. Dylan Marrs got the scoring started for Mound City with a 68 yard touchdown run right off the bat; Mound City showed the form that made them a perennial powerhouse for a long time; when you give them an inch, they take a mile. Matthew Poppa ripped off a 20 yard run; T.J. Hopkins ripped off touchdown runs of 46 and 45 yards, Dylan George had a 24 yard scoring run and a pick six, and Brendon Tubbs had a 35 yard touchdown run.
With this impressive win, Mound City moves up from #5 to #4 this week. Rock Port, which had trouble putting away Platte Valley, drops to #5. Mound City had little trouble with the Longhorns in week one.

#5 Rock Port 68, Platte Valley 22
Platte Valley tagged Rock Port for a couple of tallies; it was 40-16 at halftime before Rock Port finally pulled away for the win.

Rock Port continues to impress with a punishing ground game; they racked up nearly 400 yards against Platte Valley with an 8.6 yard clip. Gavin Abbott rushed 15 times for 210 yards, Brock Martin rushed 14 times for 87 yards, and Joey Herron rushed 10 times for 55 yards.

The Blue Jays showed some improvement through the air from week one as quarterback Alex Burke completed 6 of 16 passes for an impressive 158 yards, or 26.3 yards per completion. William Oswald had 4 catches for 121 yards. Rock Port had 538 yards in total offense.

Defensively, Brock Martin and Joey Herron had 11 tackles each.

#6 Pattonsburg 58, Braymer 12
Pattonsburg scored 44 points in the first quarter and cruised to the 58-12 halftime victory. Steven Willhite showed his week one numbers were no accident, as he completed 16 of his 20 passes for 288 yards. The scary thing about it is that he is only a junior. Cameron Jones is a capable backup; he completed 5 of 11 passes for 56 yards. He showed some running ability as well, ripping off a 20 yard run. Pattonsburg attempted 31 passes and only 5 runs in the win.

Cameron Jones had 3 catches for 108 yards, including a 76 yard score for the Panthers. Trevor Ireland had 6 catches for 66 yards, Dakota Eaton 5 catches for 34 yards, Brett Emig 3 catches for 80 yards, and Gage Sperry 1 catch for 32 yards.

Defensively, Lane Huitt had 6 tackles for Pattonsburg. Collin Briggs had 5 tackles, showing a lot of promise as a sophomore. Carter Crone had 5 more. Trevor Ireland and Lane Huitt had one sack each. Cameron Jones had two picks and two fumble recoveries. Gavin Garrett had one fumble recovery.
The biggest improvement for Pattonsburg this year has been on the defensive side of the ball. After playing in a ton of track meets last year, they have played two games of lock-down defense, forcing five Braymer turnovers and holding them to 77 rushing yards, 43 passing yards, and 120 total yards. The worst thing about this game for Braymer is that they still have to play Worth County in week three.

#7 North Andrew 36, St. Joseph Christian 6
A pair of teams with disappointing starts in week one faced off. St. Joseph Christian scored first, but then North Andrew’s ground game took over, grinding out 38 carries for 238 yards as they got ahead 22-6 at halftime and slowly pulled away for the win. Pattonsburg, which knocked out Christian in week one, moves past North Andrew this week, but the Cardinals frequently started off slowly pre-Schoonover, only to catch fire later in the year. We’ll know more about how the teams measure up to each other next week, as North Andrew and Pattonsburg play each other.

For the Cardinals, Jaden Baker had 13 carries for 100 yards. Logan Hughes had 15 carries for 88 yards, while Ryan Wilmes had 9 carries for 50 yards. Hughes had 8 tackles to lead North Andrew defensively.

#8 Southwest Livingston 68, South/Nodaway-Holt 22
Last year, Southwest Livingston stumbled against the Spartans in week two after the Spartans got shellshocked in a week one halftime loss to Worth County. But this year, Southwest Livingston had little trouble getting a win over the Spartans.

#9 East Atchison 58, North/West Nodaway 0

East Atchison had little trouble getting back on the winning track after its week one loss to Southwest Livingston in this halftime game. Both North/West Nodaway and Platte Valley will come into next week’s matchup desperate for a win.

#10 Orrick 54, Norborne/Hardin-Central 6

Norborne/Hardin-Central dug themselves into a 38-6 hole at halftime before they realized they could play football with Orrick. They had 56 rushes for 247 yards in the loss. Kysor Hughes had 21 carries for 108 yards, while Brayden Schick had 21 carries for 87 yards. Defensively, Levi Cheney had 9 tackles for Norborne/Hardin-Central.

OTHER GAMES
DeKalb 34, Chilhowee 6

Turnovers were the big difference in this game, with DeKalb getting two picks and two fumble recoveries in this win. DeKalb showed a lot of versatility in this game, with six players getting 30 or more yards total and six players getting at least one gain of 10 yards or more. The Tigers had 355 yards on the ground and 104 more through the air.

For DeKalb, Tyler Matson had 14 carries for 111 yards. Darren McElfresh had 15 carries for 87 yards. Kolbie Hargrave had 10 carries for 54 yards, Drake Miller 3 carries for 37 yards, Coyote Henderson 6 carries for 34 yards, and Wyatt Ashpaugh 3 carries for 32 yards.

Wyatt Ashpaugh continued to impress through the air after having a strong week one. He had 8 completions out of 15 attempts for 101 yards. Zach Novotny had 4 catches for 55 yards. Defensively, Joe Lofland had 10 tackles. DeKalb had three sacks for the game and eight pass deflections.

Greenfield 80, Osceola 20
Greenfield went back to 11-man this year, but played Osceola in an eight man game and had little trouble with them.

North Shelby 36, Christian Life (IL) 0
North Shelby had little trouble getting to 2-0 against their Illinois rivals. They spread the ball out, giving nine different players carries on the ground; they got 186 yards on the ground and 101 through the air in the win. Bryant Gibbons had 13 tackles and Rowdy Vanskike 10 for North Shelby. Gibbons had 2 sacks.  North Shelby recovered three fumbles and had one pick.
