Worth County could not get their bats going against Albany and fell 4-1 to the Warriors Tuesday as they fell to one lone win against five losses. The Tigers got their lone win of the season 6-3 in the Albany Tournament to start the season. Since then, they have dropped four close games; the one game they were outclassed in was their 12-0 Maryville loss Monday the 10th.
Albany did not use Riley Houts against Worth County the first time until the Tigers had the game well in hand in Albany; this time, they started her, and she went the distance. She kept everyone off-balance by changing speeds right and left, getting people to chase balls out of the zone, and using her breaking ball and drop ball to good effect. Worth County made some spectacular plays in the field, including three double plays, to keep the game close. But they could not get their bats going until it was too late.
In the first inning, Gabby Newman put Albany in front to stay with a solo blast to left field into the wind with two outs in the inning. Worth County could only muster a scratch hit in the first two innings by Jill Hardy when she dug one out of the dirt over second baseman Paige Brown’s head for a base hit in the first.
In the third inning, Abby Wilson singled to right to lead off. Montana Moffat (running for Wilson) advanced to second on a wild pitch and went to third on Michayla Martin’s grounder. Riley Houts singled her home to make it 2-0. It would have been worse, but second baseman Allison Larison made a diving backhanded grab of Newman’s line drive and doubled Houts off first to end the third.
In the Worth County third, Allison Larison got hit on the foot to start the inning. They worked her around to third, but she couldn’t score. She took second on a wild pitch. Abbi Caddenhead struck out, Megan Cassavaugh grounded out to move her to third, but Braidy Hunt grounded out.
Albany threatened in the fourth when Emily Poppa singled to center with one out. But then Kaycee Messner grounded to Larison, who threw to Kennedy Galanakis at first for one out. But Poppa wandered too far off second and Galanakis threw behind her for a double play.
In the Worth County fourth, Jill Hardy walked to start the frame. Kennedy Galanakis moved her over to put her in scoring position, but Haley Hunt’s screamer was right at third baseman Emily Poppa to keep the run from scoring. Anna Gladstone grounded out to end the inning.
Albany threatened in the fifth with one out when Sierra Anthony walked and Larison dropped a throw to first on a bunt as Abby Wilson reached safely. Mickayla Martin hit a screamer that looked headed for extra bases, but Anna Gladstone came over from center clear into left and made a running backhanded catch. Pitcher Haley Hunt struck out Riley Houts on a called third strike to end the inning.
Albany finally broke through in the sixth when Gabby Newman reached when third baseman Merrideth Spiers’ throw was wide. Amber Davis’ pop fly to right dropped in for a hit to put runners on first and third. Davis stole second and Newman scored on a wild pitch. Emily Poppa grounded under Spiers’ legs for an error to make it 4-0. Albany nearly broke it open in the seventh when Abby Wilson singled to center. Mickayla Martin came up and hit a line drive to right center, but Anna Gladstone came over to catch it. She threw to shortstop Jill Hardy, whose relay doubled off Montana Moffat (running for Wilson) to end the inning.
Worth County got its lone tally in the seventh. With one out, Haley Hunt reached on Houts’ error when a grounder rolled through her legs. She went to second on a wild pitch and Anna Gladstone singled past short and went to second when Albany threw home to keep Hunt at third. But then Merrideth Spiers hit a grounder to the mound, Hunt got caught in a rundown, and Anna Gladstone came over to third, then started to run back to second as she saw Hunt coming back to third. Albany tagged her out, but that bought time for Hunt to come in and score to make it 4-1 as Spiers reached first. Allison Larison then grounded out to short to end the game.
