Northeast Nodaway posted their third win of the year, downing Pattonsburg 10-0 Monday as Blair Stoll flirted with a perfect game, retiring ten Panther batters in a row before shutting down the Panthers with two hits and nine strikeouts. The fielders were solidly behind Stoll, only making one error for the night. The Bluejays have gotten off to a slow start this year, but have gotten better every single time, finally breaking into the win column against North Andrew Saturday in Stanberry and Pattonsburg Monday night.
The win for Northeast was the first shutout since 2015-2016, when Dallis Coffelt and the Bluejays shut down South Nodaway 8-0 in a conference game.
NEN looked to get the ball in play, only looking at 11 called strikes, only taking two called strikeouts, and only striking out twice. The result was a solid effort as the Bluejays get ready for the North Andrew Tournament later this week, weather permitting.
Kirsten Slessman hit a towering fly ball to Maggie Schmitz in center field to start the first before Stoll stuck out Brittani Adams and Shaila Cramer to end the inning. Makayla Adwell singled to center and made it all the way to third when the center fielder let the ball get by. Maggie Schmitz had a productive out when her bunt got Adwell home for the first run. Paige West singled to left to restart Northeast and stole second; Anne Schieber singled down the left field line and went to second on the throw home as West was safe. She went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Blair Stoll reached on an error when shortstop Weatherby Bailey’s throw was wide of first. That made it 3-0.
Northeast’s momentum was halted when Angela Standiford hit a line drive hard, but right back at pitcher Shaila Cramer, who doubled Stoll off second after Blair had taken second on a wild pitch. They couldn’t score in the second, the only inning they couldn’t score, but in the meantime, Blair Stoll held the fort, striking out the side in the third. She had help in the field in the second as left fielder MariBeth Lamb caught Makelle Hobson’s fly ball and second baseman Kirsten Morrow, inserted for Cassy Redden (knee), made a play in the field.
Paige West finally restarted NEN in the third when she hit a long drive to deep left field that rolled all the way to the wall 270 feet away. She circled the bases and made it standing up before Pattonsburg could get the ball back in and Northeast was up 4-0.
Brittani Adams finally broke up Stoll’s bid for a perfect game with one out in the fourth after Stoll had struck out five in a row; she laid down a bunt and reached on an error when second baseman Kirsten Morrow dropped Stoll’s throw and stole second. Stoll and Shaila Cramer got into a long battle and Cramer fouled off four pitches hard, but Stoll struck her out after a 10-pitch at bat. Makelle Hobson grounded out to Stoll to end the inning.
Northeast broke the game open in the fourth when Delaney McIntyre’s pop fly behind second dropped in for a base hit. She went to second on a wild pitch, and Kirsten Morrow walked on a 3-2 pitch. They moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, and Makayla Adwell hit a screamer that caromed off pitcher Shaila Cramer’s hand into center field for a base hit that scored two; Cramer was shaken up, but OK. Maggie Schmitz reached on Bailey’s bobble; Paige West popped out, but Anne Schieber walked on four pitches to load the bases. Blair Stoll shot a single up the middle to score two to make it 8-0, finishing Cramer. Jaden Gannan got Pattonsburg out of the inning, getting Angela Standiford and MariBeth Lamb to pop out.
Brynn Teel finally broke up Stoll’s no-hit bid in the fifth as she shot a single up the middle, but Jaden Gannan struck out into a double play as Teel took off for second, but was thrown out by catcher Makayla Adwell. Quincy Crone singled to center and Ellie Sperry (running for Crone) took off for second, but once again, Makayla Adwell made a strong throw to second and Paige West snagged it in front of the bag and made a diving tag for the third out.
Ilenia Ricci and Mirja Gerloff both came off the bench for Northeast to bat in the fifth, and both drew walks to start the inning. Makayla Adwell had a productive out as she grounded to first to advance them to second and third, and Maggie Schmitz’s pop fly behind second dropped untouched for a double as Ricci scored and Gerloff went to third. West got her third hit of the game to end it as Gerloff crossed the plate.
