Katie Hayse 1942-2018

Kathleen Louise (Eisele) Hayse was born September 28th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Henry P. Eisele and Kathleen Mary (Plum).  She was an older sister to two brothers, John and George.

Katie Lou grew up in Boston, Indianapolis and Chicago.  In 1960 she graduated from Wheaton High School in Wheaton, Illinois.  She decided to follow her grandmother and mother’s footsteps and go into education.  This decision led her to Iowa State University and the love of her life.  At Iowa State she met a young man named Preston Hayse.  Katie once wrote home to her mother about the cute boy in one of her classes.  Kay always said she could picture Katie reeling him in.

Preston and Katie were married November 25, 1963, the same day President Kennedy was buried.  Preston and Katie finished their educations at Iowa State before he entered the military.  They made their homes in Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Illinois and Iowa while Preston served in the military and finished his PhD.  During this time two children were born Peter John on December 28, 1965 and Shaun Margaret on January 9, 1973.

The Hayse’s settled in Ringgold County on April 15, 1975.  Katie sold insurance for Farm Bureau before going back to education.  She taught 6th grade at Worth County RIII schools until her retirement in 1999.

Katie was passionate about her family and always put them first.  She rarely, if ever, missed one of her grandchildren’s events and was a loud supporter in the stands.  Katie could sew anything and often made clothes for the kids and grandkids.  She even made Shaun’s senior prom dress the morning of prom.  She often made costumes for various theatre productions, as well.  In retirement she found a passion in quilting.  She made many quilts for her family and friends, each one pieced with love.  Katie was teaching her granddaughters to quilt, as well.  Everyone in the family has a quilt to cherish.

She had a big laugh and sense of humor and enjoyed time with her family and friends.  She was a member of the Queen Bee quilting guild in Creston.

Katie and Preston loved one another, they were each other’s best friend and they loved to travel.  They visited all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Scotland and England.  They enjoyed taking their grandkids on trips white water rafting, to the mountains, Yellowstone and just to the zoo, as well.
Katie went home to be with the Lord on July 1, 2018 surrounded by her family.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents; her brother John; her parents-in-law Bob and Virginia Hayse.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband Preston of 54 ½ years; son Peter and wife Sally; daughter Shaun and husband Clint Kniep; Grandchildren Kyle and Tyler Hayse, Jillian and Tessa Kniep; special family Isaac Detweiler and Menno Bontrager; and a host of friends.
