Worth County's football team took two out of three at the Jamboree Friday night, beating North Nodaway 12-2, dropping a 6-0 decision to Stanberry, and beating West Nodaway 24-0. The Tigers showed that they have a lot of size and speed this year as they had four different players have breakaway touchdowns. The challenge will be to see if they can gell in time. It will not be easy as they will face two tough opponents in Rock Port and Mound City early in the season. That will be a far cry from the easy games that they have had in the past early on.
North Nodaway was the first game of the night for Worth County. The Mustangs got one first down, but then stalled as Wyatt Rush and Tyler Schmitz were there on defense for the Tigers. On their first play from scrimmage, the Tigers came out on fire as Dallas Greenland, the new runningback, took a pitch from quarterback Cole Parman and broke away down the right side of the field for the first score of the evening from 50 yards out. North Nodaway then fumbled the ball away on the first play of their next series as Kevin Stoll got the big hit and Andrew Mullock was there for the recovery. They went two for two on scoring as Dylan Kinsella fired out and kicked out a defender, which freed up Greenland for a cutback for a 10-yard score to make it 12-0. North Nodaway got their lone score of the evening against the JV off a bad snap that resulted in a safety.
The second game was against Stanberry. The Bulldogs had the ball first and got an initial first down, but then Dylan Kinsella ran down a screen pass from behind as he showed a lot of speed to thwart the drive. Worth County could not convert on their ensuing possession as they only managed seven yards in four plays and Stanberry took over on downs at the Worth County 37. This time, Stanberry converted a fourth and five as Nate Luke took a 32 yard screen pass to the one, setting up a Jesse Oldham score. Worth County could not get more than four yards on any of their ensuing plays as they learned that they would have a lot of work to do between Friday and the opener against Rock Port on the 24th. Communication and blocking were areas in need of improvement by Coach Chuck Borey after the game.
Worth County came out with something to prove in their next game as Wyatt Rush showed a big burst of speed, shooting through the initial line against West Nodaway, breaking three different tackles, and heading off to the races to make it 6-0. Aaron Patton followed with a juggling catch and run for another long score to make it 12-0. The JV took it from there and Andrew Mullock shot through and scored from 50 yards out and then added another long run from 75 yards out. He added another long run of 52 yards and only a desperation dive that resulted in a facemask prevented a third score. Andrew wound up with three carries for 177 yards for the night. Brevyn Ross had another breakaway score, but it was called back by a penalty.
The second string defense played for much of the scrimmage against West Nodaway. Dalton Miller and Andrew Faustlin showed some promise on defense. Shadow Briner had a big hit on a receiver, Truman Moore ran down a back from behind, and Nathan Pointer, one of the littlest guys on the team, shot through and got a sack.
