On Wednesday August 15, 2012, the Northwest Missouri Master
Gardeners and Buchanan County University of Missouri Extension Office will be
hosting Tomato Fest! from 6:30-8:00
pm. The event will be held at the
Buchanan County Extension Office, 4125 Mitchell Avenue, St. Joseph,
Missouri. The extension office is
located on West Campus of Missouri Western State University just off of
Mitchell and north of the Kit Bond Science and Technology building. Follow the signs to the tomato plot.
Guests may come anytime between 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. to see
the 25 different varieties of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes growing in the
Extension demonstration plot, along with several varieties of peppers. There
are many old tomato varieties (heirlooms) that are different sizes, colors, and
shapes. Participants will see examples
and can get information on producing, preparing, and preserving tomatoes, and
may participate in a tomato taste evaluation of the different varieties. Kelli Wilmes, MU Food and Nutrition
Specialist, Tom Fowler, Horticulturalist, and Northwest Missouri Master
Gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions on tomatoes.
Call the Buchanan County MU Extension office 816-279-1691
for more information. This event is open
and free to the public.
