Around 40 kids attended the 'Lil Tigers football camp Saturday (August 18th) and learned football fundamentals, played a rugby-style scrimmage, listened to High School Football Coach Chuck Borey give a brief talk, and have pizza afterwards. The team will have a lot of depth and a lot of competition this year if the rugby competition is any evidence; the players competed for the right to go first in line for the pizza and hardly any of the games were decided by more than one score. The 'Lil Tigers will host a home game on September 22nd, where there will be football games all day starting at 10:30 a.m. The 'Lil Tigers will wrap up the event at around 6 p.m. when they will host Bethany Purple.
Borey talked about the state championship team of last year and encouraged the kids to make good choices and surround themselves with good people. "If you do that, good things will happen," he said.
Most of the morning was dominated by blocking and tackling drills as the campers went from station to station. The first game is three weeks away; the first practices began August 21st. Players will get mouthpieces and helmets at that time. Among opponents on the schedule this year are Bedford, Mount Ayr, Central Decatur, Bethany Purple, Albany, and East Union.
