Tiger Girls Shut Down Top Scorer in Area, Score School Record 37 Points in Quarter

Worth County shut down Jasmine Taylor, the leading scorer in the area, and scored a school record 37 points in the third quarter as Worth County came away with a 77-42 win over Braymer Friday in their first game after the break.

Braymer came into the game with four wins, but they were capable of putting points on the board. It shaped up to be a real dogfight at first after a strong start by Worth County. But all of a sudden, they started hitting everything they threw up in the third quarter. Braymer was a young team; they had ten players listed on the roster, but only eight dressed out. In addition, they had another solid post player in Kennedy Stone; both Taylor and Stone were on the rebounding leaderboards for the News-Press.

Kaylee McElvain hit a shot from the right side and Kristin New hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Anna Gladstone to make it 5-0 with 5:23 left. Dallas Hall countered with a free throw, but Jill Hardy hit Kristin New for three from the left wing and Jessi Badell scored from the right baseline to make it 10-1, prompting Braymer’s first timeout. Braymer started fighting back, getting their deficit down to 17-10 with 22 seconds left, only for Megan Cassavaugh to drive and kick out to Jill Hardy at the buzzer for three to make it 20-10. The big difference in the first quarter was turnovers; Worth County didn’t throw it away at all in the period.

Regan Allee picked up her third foul in the second quarter trying to guard Taylor; Worth County had to go deep into their bench to try and shut her down as Jessi Badell, Haley Hunt, and Merrideth Spiers all took turns trying to guard her. Braymer twice got their deficit down to nine before a drive from Kaylee McElvain and a free throw from Anna Gladstone put Worth County up 32-20 at the half.
It looked like it would be a dogfight like the game in Braymer last year, but after Kaylee McElvain aired it out to Anna Gladstone for a three-point play to make it 35-20, the floodgates opened. Anna Gladstone followed with a steal and then Regan Allee got a tip and steal, prompting Braymer’s second timeout with Worth County leading 39-20 with 6:51 left.

Worth County switched from their man to their 1-3-1 trapping defense, which seemed to throw Braymer off-kilter, as they could never get into a rhythm in the second half. They put their press back on after having taken it off in the second quarter.

Stone sliced through the Tiger defense to cut it to 40-22, but then Worth County erupted again as Jessi Badell hit Anna Gladstone inside. Anna Gladstone got another steal after Jessi Badell and Kristin New tipped around an errant pass and converted it into free throws. That prompted Braymer’s third timeout, but Kristin New hit a three-pointer on the right side to make it 47-22.

Stone hit again for Braymer, but then Anna Gladstone scored again off steals from Kristin New and Kaylee McElvain and Regan Allee scored off a steal. Jessi Badell then got a steal and threw to Kristin New to make it 55-24. The time that passed seemed like an eternity, but in reality, there was still 4:10 left in the quarter, and the Tigers were not done.

Regan Allee, who had not scored all night, suddenly got a putback and then cut inside and got a pass from Kaylee McElvain to make it 59-24. Some of the starters, including Gladstone, came out and were done for the night; Hallie Russell banked a 3-pointer and Taylor jumped a pass to cut it to 59-29. But then Jill Hardy hit a three-pointer from the right wing off a pass from Regan Allee, Regan scored two free throws after a drive after Merrideth Spiers kicked it out to her, Megan Cassavaugh hit Allee for three, and then Megan Cassavaugh got a defensive board to Regan Allee, who pushed it ahead to Jill Hardy at the buzzer to make it 69-29.

The reserves took over for the fourth quarter and they managed to keep the game in running clock territory. Haley Hunt scored six and Merrideth Spiers two. Defensively, Worth County held Taylor to 16, six in the fourth quarter after the game was already decided.

Anna Gladstone had 22 points for the Tigers; even more important was what she didn’t do – she didn’t commit a single foul that game. Kristin New had 15, Jill Hardy and Regan Allee had 11 each, Kaylee McElvain had 8, Haley Hunt 6, and Merrideth Spiers and Jill Hardy 2.

Haley Hunt had 3 blocks for Worth County. Kristin New had 2, and Jessi Badell and Regan Allee had 1.

Defensive rebounding had been a problem against Braymer last year, but Worth County got so many tips and steals this time that it wasn’t a factor this year; they were able to hold Braymer to ten offensive boards. Regan Allee and Kaylee McElvain had 5 boards. Kristin New and Haley Hunt had 4, Jessi Badell and Megan Cassavaugh 3, Merrideth Spiers 2, and Jill Hardy and Anna Gladstone 1.

Regan Allee had 9 assists. Megan Cassavaugh had 4, Anna Gladstone 3, Jill Hardy, Kristin New, Jessi Badell, and Merrideth Spiers 2 each, and Haley Hunt and Justina Wimer had 1.

As a team, Worth County had 37 tips for the night. Kristin New had 10, Anna Gladstone 8, Jill Hardy 6, Jessi Badell 5, Megan Cassavaugh 3, Kaylee McElvain and Haley Hunt 2, and Merrideth Spiers 1.

Regan Allee had 7 steals for the Tigers. Anna Gladstone had 6, Jessi Badell and Kristin New 4, Megan Cassavaugh 3, and Haley Hunt, Jill Hardy, and Merrideth Spiers 1.

Vicki Warner 1947-2019

Vicki Sue Warner, 71, of Ravenwood, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

Vicki was born on March 9, 1947 in St. Joseph, Missouri to William C. and Phyllis A. (Barger) Warner. She was a 1965 graduate of Northeast Nodaway High School. Vicki was a member of the Ravenwood Christian Church and retired from Energizer Battery Plant after 23 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Edward D. Warner and a great nephew, Fox E. Warner.

Survivors include her sisters, Jolene Hayes, Marta (David) Giesken, and Becky Carter all of Ravenwood, Missouri; two nieces, Allyson (Mitchell) Gladman, Maryville, Missouri and Abi Warner, Des Moines, Iowa; nephews, Billy Hayes, Maryville, Missouri, Mike (Gina) Giesken, Parnell, Missouri, Jason (Ashley) Giesken and Jon (Brittany) Giesken of Ravenwood, Missouri and six great-nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service 7 pm Tuesday, January 8th at Price Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Shamrock Boys Drop Wild Game Against Knights

North Harrison dropped a wild 72-67 loss to South Holt, a perennially solid team, at Holiday Hoops on December 27th. They only shot 38% from the field, but they were able to stay in the game until the end. South Holt gradually built up a seven point lead after three quarters; both teams tried to run each other out of the gym in the fourth, but South Holt came away with the victory.

Steven Willhite had 21 points to lead the Shamrocks. Logan Craig and Brett Emig had 18 each, Gavin Garrett had 4, and Logan Huitt, Grant Claycomb, and Collin Briggs had 2 each. Steven Willhite had five threes for North Harrison. The Shamrocks were 12 for 16 from the line.

Steven Willhite did all he could to keep his squad in the game, getting 17 boards. As a team, the Shamrocks had 47 boards, which kept them in the game despite their cold shooting. Brett Emig had 9, Logan Craig 8, Collin Briggs 5, Gavin Garrett 3, Logan Huitt and Grant Claycomb 2, and Wade Briggs 1.

Brett Emig Has Career Night as Shamrock Boys Drop Grundy County

Logan Craig had 28 points and Brett Emig had a career night with 27 as North Harrison ran away from Grundy County 79-41 Friday in Galt. North Harrison had dropped a 72-67 decision to a perennially solid South Holt team in Holiday Hoops over the break, but came out ready to play Friday, racing out to a 24-9 first quarter lead. They scored 29 in the second and 21 in the third to pull away to a running clock margin.

Besides Craig and Emig, Gavin Garrett had a career night with 9 points. Steven Willhite and Grant Claycomb had 5, Collin Briggs 3, and Logan Huitt 2. The Shamrocks shot 57% from the field. Grant Claycomb, Steven Willhite, Brett Emig, and Collin Briggs all had one three-pointer.

Logan Craig was able to get to the line at will, making 10 out of his 13 free throws. As a team, North Harrison was 15 for 23 from the line.

Craig also had 12 boards, to complete a double double. Brett Emig had 8, Logan Huitt and Steven Willhite 4, Cruz Ury and Collin Briggs 2, and Wade Briggs and Tyler Lundy 1.

Shamrock Girls Fall to South Holt in Holiday Hoops

North Harrison’s girls fell 41-25 in the Holiday Hoops Classic December 27th to South Holt. The Knights had been a doormat team for the last several years, but showed some life in some games last year, downing Rock Port. They are greatly improved this year, beating Nodaway-Holt, which started North Harrison’s losing streak.

The first and third quarters undid the Shamrocks. They were outscored in the first quarter 7-1. They rallied to close to within 16-12 at the half, only to have a bad third quarter as they were outscored 14-3. The Shamrocks continued to struggle with turnovers this year, as they turned it over 37 times against South Holt.

Emma Craig led the scoring for North Harrison, as she scored 14. Seven different players scored, but it wasn’t enough. Camden Castleberry had 3, Kami Gibson, Deva Wallace, and Addie Slaughter had 2, and Rainey Fordyce and Mason Cracraft had 1. Castleberry had the lone 3-pointer for North Harrison. The Shamrocks were ice cold from the field, shooting only 7 for 21.

North Harrison stayed in the game thanks to their free throws. They were 10 for 17 for the game.
Emma Craig had a double double as she had 10 boards to go with her 14 points. Addie Slaughter also had 10. Kami Gibson had 4, and Mason Cracraft and Olivia Babinski had 1 each.

North Harrison did much better against Grundy County, one of the top two teams in the HDC this year along with Mercer. They still lost, but they put up a tough fight before falling 50-42 Friday.

Emma Craig, Logan Craig Assault News-Press Leaderboard

Shamrock athletes Emma Craig on the girls side and Logan Craig on the boys side are assaulting the St. Joseph News-Press scoring leaderboards this year.

Several local athletes are on the scoring leaderboard. Emma Craig is fourth with 17.6 points per game. Madelynn Mattson (NEN) is eighth with 14.1 points per game, Anna Gladstone (Worth County) is ninth with 13.9, and Regan Allee is 17th with 9.9.

Emma Craig is the leading rebounder in the area with 9.9 boards per game. A Bluejay, Paige West, is third with 9.3, while teammate Madelynn Mattson is seventh with 7.8. For North Harrison, Kami Gibson is tenth with 7.1, while Jessi Badell from Worth County is 11th with 6.8.

For Northeast Nodaway, Paige West is second in steals per game with 5.4.

On the boys side, Logan Craig is second in the area with 22.5 points per game. A teammate, Brett Emig, is 13th with 16.2 points per game. Logan is eighth in the area in rebounding with 8.0 per game.

For Northeast Nodaway, Chet Spire is fifth in the area with 3.6 steals per game, while Spencer Weir leads the area in steals per game with 4.0.

Mustang Boys Double Stewartsville

North Nodaway’s boys doubled up Stewartsville 42-21 Friday to get their seventh win of the season. They have already improved on last year’s mark with the win. The Mustangs trailed 6-4 after one quarter, but then played lockdown defense in the second, outscoring the Cardinals 15-2 to take a 19-8 lead. They were never seriously threatened after that.

Tyler Bix had 12, while Ryan Riley had 10 for North Nodaway. Arron Coleman had 9, Cody Wood 8, and Karson Oberhauser had 3. Ryan Riley had two 3-pointers, while Cody Wood and Karson Oberhauser had 1. North Nodaway was 12 for 20 from the line.
