Wild Baseball Game in 1928 Saw Grant City Beat Ridgeway 17-16

Around 500 people came to Kelso Park to see the Grant City Baseball Club win a wild game, 17-16 over Ridgeway on Sunday, April 29th, 1928, the May 2nd Worth County Tribune reported. The cost of admission in those days was 35 cents. The game was similar to one played between Northeast Nodaway and East Atchison this year, in which a strong wind howled out of the southwest and whipped up dust in everyone’s faces.

Ridgeway jumped on Grant City 5-0 in the first, but then Grant City jumped right back in the game, scoring four in their half. Three  times, Ridgeway would score, but then Grant City would come back in their half of the inning. Finally, Ridgeway scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-13 lead and had a shutdown inning to seemingly take control. But then Grant City erupted in the eighth with four runs and then shut down Ridgeway in the ninth to account for the margin.

Walker and Bailey (the account doesn’t give the first names) homered for Grant City, while Ridgeway had an apparent home run, only for them to get called out for failing to touch second.

Grant City and Ridgeway were part of the Northwest Missouri Baseball League that year. Other members were Stanberry, Albany, Union Star, and Clarksdale.
