Ali Brown threw a one hitter and struck out 12 over six innings and the Worth County Tigers walked off against Stanberry 2-1 Thursday to beat a long-time nemesis.
It looked like the Tigers would waste Brown’s effort at first. Autumn Cousatte had a leadoff triple in the first, only to be stranded. Lanie Cousatte’s ill fated dash to the plate on a wild pitch that bounced right back to the catcher fired up Stanberry and they subsequently got their lone run in the fifth.
Stanberry got its first baserunner in the third after Brown had struck out five of the first six Bulldog batters to start the game. But Brown’s no-hitter remained intact in the fourth thanks to freshman Rayleigh Smith’s catch of a screamer in right that looked like extra bases.
But then Amelia Wallace hit a screamer that dropped in for a triple to start the fifth and came home after a routine pop fly to second. Smith ran down another line drive for the Tigers in the sixth, but then things looked bad for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth.
With one out, Maddie Runde singled just under the shortstop’s glove, but Liz Brown struck out for the second out. Lanie Cousatte hit what is normally a routine base hit down the right field line, but the Stanberry right fielder was positioned right behind the first baseman and fielded it and threw to first for what would have been the final out. But Cousatte atoned for her earlier miscue on the basepaths and put on a burst of speed to beat it out and the game continued.
Rayleigh Smith, Abbi Brown, and Autumn Cousatte all walked, the latter two forcing in runs, and the Tigers had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
