The Worth County R-III High School will hold the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at 5:00 pm at the Matteson Memorial Football Field, weather permitting.
“We deliberated a long time and held off on graduation hoping that we would be able to allow as many family members to attend,” said Jon Adwell, high school principal. “Unfortunately, we have several graduates that will begin their next chapter in life the last week of May and first week of June. Memorial Weekend is the last weekend that we can hold graduation and have everyone attend the ceremony.”
The administration will determine on May 21 if the weather looks favorable for the outdoor ceremony on Saturday, May 23. The high school has two contingency plans in case the weather is not. The ceremony may be pushed to Sunday, May 24, or may be moved indoors to the gymnasium. If the ceremony is moved indoors, then the guests per graduate will be limited to stay within the Governor’s guidelines for room capacity during the current phase of reopening the state to social gatherings.
“Even in the football stadium those families and guests sitting in the bleachers will need to maintain the required social distancing between family groups,” said Adwell. “With the outdoor venue we hope more people can view the ceremony from their cars or standing along the fence.”
