Tiger Girls Fall to Panthers; End Season at 21 Wins

Worth County’s girls fell to Mound City in the Quarterfinal game Friday 50-24 and ended their season at 21 wins. It was their best season since the 2003-2004 season; that team also beat North Harrison in the District Title Game in overtime and also fell to Mound City to end their season.
The game started out close, but as it wore on, Mound City established themselves as one of the best defensive teams in the area, completely denying Worth County easy looks. In the second half, after Worth County finally got untracked a bit, Mound City took big chunks of time off the clock to secure the win.

Worth County dug themselves into a 7-2 hole thanks to the shooting of Paige Quilty, who knocked down a triple after a tipped ball found its way into her hands. They fought back as Anna Gladstone scored off a backdoor look and Kaylee McElvain scored from the left wing off a pass from Kristin New. Deanna Clayton got loose in transition with 1:40 left, but Kristin New scored off a 3-pointer to tie it at 9. Quilty struck again for her eighth point in the first quarter, but Kristin New scored off a drive with 6 seconds left and Jill Hardy struck from the right side for three to give Worth County its only lead of the night at 14-12 to start the second.

But from there, Kameron Freemyer showed why she is one of the top post players in the area; she also stepped outside and hit a 3-pointer as she erupted for 11 of Mound City’s 22 points in the second. Clayton scored five in the period for Mound City, while Quilty added another triple as Mound City made it 34-18. Anna Gladstone scored four in the period, but Worth County hurt themselves at the line by going 0 for 4 late.

Freemyer’s three point play made it 41-20 with 4:17 left, and nobody could score for the next 5:34, as Worth County tried to make a stand like they did in the fourth quarter of the Southwest Livingston game, but Mound City’s defense kicked into high gear. Jill Hardy’s free throws cut it to 43-24 at the 5:33 mark of the fourth, but then Mound City’s delay game took copious amounts of time off the clock to help them secure the win.
