Worth County fell to North Andrew at home in December, were run out of the gym at Stanberry, but gave undefeated North Andrew all they could handle Friday before they fell 67-61 in overtime Friday to end their season with 24 wins.
Somehow, they were still in the game after one despite throwing the ball away six times and giving up seven offensive boards. Worth County used the long ball to stay afloat, getting threes from Tevin Cameron, Cade Allee, and Ryan McClellan as the two teams battled to a 15-15 draw.
That seemed to give them the confidence to realize they could play basketball with North Andrew. Cade Allee hit a 3-pointer and Drake Kinsella and Ryan McClellan scored off drives to make it 22-15 early in the second.
Ryan Hughes got loose in transition to spark the Cards after the latter basket and they came back to take a 23-22 lead, capped by Jacob Powelson’s triple. But then Ryan McClellan added two free throws and Tevin Cameron added a three before Aidan DeLong countered with one of his own to make it 27-26. Worth County had turned the ball over five times in the period, but was somehow still ahead by one.
Following a foul and a technical on Caleb Patterson, Worth County moved into the lead after DeLong’s free throw had tied it up, getting four free throws from Cade Allee and two from Ryan McClellan to make it 33-27. But back to back threes from Lance Streeby kept North Andrew in it and the Cardinals fought back to tie it at 40 after three following DeLong’s triple.
Neither team could take control for much of the fourth, with both teams exchanging leads until Ryan McClellan hit Drake Kinsella for three with 1:25 left to put Worth County in front 49-47. Jacob Powelson missed a three and Ryan McClellan hit one of two to make it 50-47 with 52 seconds as North Andrew had to start fouling. Hughes and Powelson both missed threes, and McClellan hit another free throw to make it two possessions at 51-47 with 30 seconds left.
But with 20 seconds left, Hughes got a hard ball screen and was all alone for three from the top of the key to make it 51-50. Cade Allee made one of two from the line with 18 seconds left, but DeLong came open off a screen and made a contested look underneath the basket over Mason Hawk to send the game into overtime.
Ryan McClellan’s free throw put Worth County in front 53-52 with 3:02 left, but then Hughes countered with a three to make it 55-53. McClellan missed a runner and free throws from Patterson made it two possessions with 2:09 left. Drake Kinsella’s free throw with 1:54 left and a traveling call on Streeby gave Worth County a chance to tie, but Ryan Hughes, who had broken Worth County’s hearts often over the last two years, did so again with a steal to make it 59-54. Mason Hawk scored from inside with 49 seconds left to make it 59-56, but with time winding down, Worth County had to start fouling. They put Streeby on the line, but he came through for his squad, making 8 out of 8 from the line to secure his team the win.
