Worth County’s boys set a school record with their 24th win Tuesday against Winston, defeating them 57-39 in sectionals. It broke the old mark of 23 wins, set during the 1982-1983 school year, when the Tigers first won districts. Worth County got off to a fast start, held off Winston’s attempts to rally, and then proceeded to pull away for the victory.
The Tigers got off to a torrid start, fueled by six from Drake Kinsella, a three pointer and a drive from Cade Allee, and a triple from Tevin Cameron. Winston burned two timeouts before they could stop Worth County’s run; by that time, they were already down 14-2 at the 3:45 mark of the first quarter.
Winston began fighting back behind one of the top scorers in the area in Jacob Lewis, who lit up the scoreboard for 21 points. Worth County shut down Cy Uthe, their other big gun, holding him to eight points. And nobody else was able to step in for Winston.
Lewis and the Redbirds fought back to within 17-12 after one and to within 17-16 at the 2:56 mark of the second quarter as the Tigers went through a prolonged scoring drought, going scoreless for a span of 7:20. But finally, Caleb Parman hit two free throws and Cade Allee hit a 3-pointer to put Worth County up 22-16 at the half.
Drake Kinsella’s putback put Worth County up 26-16, but then Winston fought back again as Worth County had a rash of turnovers and Uthe got untracked. Jakub Hisel, a promising freshman for Winston, hit a 3-pointer to bring it within 26-25, but Lewis missed a good look that would have put Winston in front and Caleb Parman went off for eight points in the last 2:30 of the third quarter, starting off with a shot from the left wing off a pass from Drake Kinsella. Worth County went to a 1-3-1 as Caleb was going off and Cade Allee scored a backdoor look as Worth County regained a 36-28 lead.
Uthe got a putback at the third quarter buzzer and added a drive to start the fourth, but then Winston struggled against the 1-3-1 the rest of the way. In the meantime, Worth County cleaned up their turnovers; they were up to 13 by the end of the third quarter, but didn’t turn it over at all in the fourth.
Mason Hawk kicked one out to Cade Allee and Drake Kinsella connected from the high post to make it 41-32. Uthe’s backdoor look made it 44-37 with 4:42 left in the fourth, but then Caleb Parman countered with a 3-pointer, Drake Kinsella got a fourth chance putback, and then Ryan McClellan got a tip, Drake Kinsella a steal and then aired it out to Tevin Cameron to make it 51-37.
Lewis’ free throws made it 51-39, but then Ryan McClellan scored backdoor and then took a charge on defense, Cade Allee cut inside and got a pass from Ryan, and Drake Kinsella added free throws before Winston threw in the towel.
