Northeast Nodaway’s cheerleaders made their third straight trip to state this year, performing at the Show-Me Showdown last weekend. Before doing so, the school held a pep rally Thursday morning before sending them off to Springfield. The cheerleaders made an audition tape and were selected.
The NEN cheerleaders have seemingly been a good luck charm for whoever made it to state the last three years from the NW Missouri District; Mound City’s girls won the State Championship game this year, while North Andrew’s boys were third. Mound City derailed Wheatland 49-39 in the semifinal game; Wheatland had won their last two games in overtime and double overtime, but could not solve the Panthers’ stingy defense. Mound City won handily over Bradleyville 52-35 for the title. Bradleyville was the same school featured in the book “Hicks from the Sticks,” about a perennial powerhouse boys team that won titles in 1962, 1967, and 1968, including a 59-49 win over North Harrison in the 1962 title game.
Mercer’s girls won the title game last year, while Mound City also won it in 2016. On the boys side, North Andrew was third last year, while Stanberry won it in 2016, capping off a season in which both football and basketball teams were unbeaten.
