Worth County’s girls played their best game of the year Saturday and won the GRC Showcase 68-54 over Cady Pauley and the Milan Wildcats. The Tigers had another match against a Class 2 foe at the Northwest Missouri Tournament and came up two points short; however, this time, they built up a 28-10 lead in the second quarter and made it stand up against the green shirts, who had won the GRC East. Worth County had gotten their game with Pattonsburg postponed, but they were paired into the championship game as though they had won.
The Tigers got off to a slow start, as Milan raced out to a 6-2 lead in the early going. But all of a sudden, following a timeout, Regan Allee scored off a drive and added a 3-pointer to put the Tigers right back in it, up 7-6.
The teams traded blows until the latter stages of the first quarter, when a questionable call ignited the Tigers. With Worth County up 9-8, Cady Pauley plowed into Anna Gladstone with her head and shoulders, knocking her backwards several feet, yet it was Anna who was called for her second foul. Pauley hit both free throws, but then Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer from the left wing and added a drive, and Megan Cassavaugh hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Worth County up 17-10 after one.
Worth County continued its red hot shooting at the start of the second as Regan Allee hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, Kaylee McElvain scored in transition, and Kristin New hit a 3-pointer from the right side, Regan Allee capped the run with yet another 3-pointer to make it 28-10 at the 5:10 mark of the second.
Milan started picking it up defensively and started chipping away as Pauley finally got going and the rest of the cast started chipping in. By the closing seconds of the first half, Milan got as close as 11 before Kaylee McElvain hit a shot from the left wing at the buzzer to put Worth County back in front 34-21.
Anna Gladstone returned for the second half and cut inside to make it 36-21 for her first points of the game, but Pauley hit a guarded three to make it 36-26. The Wildcats got it to within ten several times, but Anna had the hot hand in the second half, always having an answer for the Tigers every time they started to get close. Kaylee McElvain scored from inside with seven seconds left to make it 53-39 going into the fourth.
Gladstone was hitting her free throws to keep Milan at bay, but they kept coming as Pauley hit another guarded three and Tahli Gray got loose in transition to finally get Milan under double digits, down 58-49 with 4:18 left. But then Regan Allee hit two free throws and Kaylee McElvain hit from the left wing to get the Tigers out of danger and put them ahead 62-49.
Pauley again brought Milan to within ten at 64-54, but then Kaylee McElvain hit two free throws, Pauley missed a 30-footer, but Kristin New and Anna Gladstone hit free throws down the stretch.
Regan Allee hit 21 points for the Tigers. Anna Gladstone had 17, Kaylee McElvain 16, Kristin New 8, and Megan Cassavaugh 6. Pauley had 33 for Milan despite Kristin New faceguarding her throughout the contest, but she had to work for her points, while Worth County's balanced scoring paid off for them.
Anna Gladstone had 4 blocks, patrolling the paint effectively as the Wildcats tried in vain to find a second scoring option. Kristin New, who faceguarded Pauley all night, stuffed two of her three-point attempts.
Regan Allee had 10 boards to complete a double double. Kaylee McElvain had 9, Anna Gladstone 8, Megan Cassavaugh 5, Kristin New 3, and Merrideth Spiers 1.
Megan Cassavaugh and Kristin New had 8 assists. Regan Allee had 6, and Anna Gladstone and Kaylee McElvain 1.

The Ray County Prosecutor’s office sent the following release regarding a child endangerment case:
On January 16, 2020, a Blue Springs, Missouri woman plead guilty to Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st degree and was sentenced to 4 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections with a suspended execution of sentence and 5 years of supervised probation with Missouri Probation and Parole.
Shelby Lynn Mattson DOB 04-09-1992, pled guilty to the charge of child endangerment in reference to a series of incidents that occurred in Ray County, Missouri in 2015. The Missouri Highway Patrol’s investigation revealed Ms. Mattson’s son, (under the age of two) had multiple injuries, including bruises, a broken femur and healing pelvic fracture while in her care. Physicians at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, determined the injuries were not consistent with an accident, as alleged by Ms. Mattson.
On January 27, 2020 The Ringgold County Sheriffs Office responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy 2 and 169 in Mount Ayr. Edwin Ehm of Arispe, IA was attempting to turn north from Hwy 2 onto 169 and sideswiped a Farmers Coop propane tanker truck driven by Richard Booth of Murray, IA.
On February 1, 2020 The Ringgold County Sheriffs Office responded to a motor vehicle crash on Hwy 2 and Glendenning Motors. Rebecca Parkis of Fontanelle, IA was traveling west on Hwy 2 attempting to make a left turn. While stopped in the Hwy Kolben Klommhaus of Mount Ayr struck her vehicle in the rear end. Parkis was cited for having an expired drivers license.
On February 3rd, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department was called to the Everystep offices on the Square in Mount Ayr for an individual who was intoxicated and belligerent. The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department arrested William Powell (62) of Diagonal on charges of Public Intoxication and Harassment.
On February 4th, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Alyshia West (20) of St. Louis alleging Purchasing Liquor by Minor, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Speeding.
On February 4th, Worth County Prosecutor Janet Wake Larison filed charges against Tony Walton (37) of Guilford alleging Failure to Stop and No Seat Belt.
On February 5th, Atchison County Prosecutor Brett Hurst filed charges against Travis Holmes (36) of Rock Port alleging Domestic Assault (Felony), Rape or Attempted Rape (Felony), Burglary (Felony), Sodomy (Felony), Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Felony), Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Felony), Harassment (Felony), and Violation of a Protection Order. Bond was denied.
On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at approximately 2:00 am, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call that there were shots fired in the 100 block of West Iowa Street in Lenox. Upon arrival the suspect, John Fraley, of Lenox, had barricaded himself in his residence and would not come out of the residence against orders given by Deputies. Adams and Ringgold County Deputies arrived on scene and secured the surrounding area. The Iowa State Patrol Negotiators were requested and arrived on scene. Deputies and Negotiators were able to get Fraley to surrender peacefully after approximately two and a half hours. A subsequent search warrant was executed on Fraley’s residence. During the search warrant, Iowa State DPS Narcotics Officers were called and assisted in the execution of the warrant. Fraley was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, interference with official acts, and possession of controlled substances - marijuana. Additional charges are pending tests results from the Iowa State DCI lab. Fraley has since been released after posting the appropriate bond.
On February 5th, Harrison County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer filed charges against Nevaeh Matson (37) of Bethany alleging Passing a Bad Check (Felony) and Forgery (Felony). This is in addition to a Forgery charge filed previously. Another Bad Check charge was dismissed by the prosecutor. Bond was set at $5,000, cash only.
On February 5th, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested Nykia Thigpen (25) of Indianapolis (IN) in Harrison County on a Marion County (IN) warrant (Trafficking with an Inmate, Possession of Controlled Substance). She was also charged with No Valid License and Speeding (86 mph). An Extradition case was subsequently filed against her in court.
On February 6th, Nodaway County Prosecutor Robert Rice filed charges against Coleton Rosser (20) of Concordia (MO) alleging No Insurance.

On February 6th, a Buchanan County Jury convicted Eric Busey (39) of Unlawful Use of a Weapon in relation to a high-speed motor vehicle chase. He had allegedly fired gunshots at a vehicle that he was pursuing.
On February 6th, Livingston County Prosecutor Adam Warren filed charges against James Utley (59) of Chillicothe alleging two counts Delivery of Controlled Substance (Felony). Bond was set at $7,500 cash only, with supervised conditions of release.
On February 7th, KQ2 reported that a Platte County jury had convicted a Parkville woman, Letti Straight, of the killing of her ex-husband, Charles Cammisano in 2007. Straight is scheduled to be sentenced on May 26th to life without parole. The shooting death followed an argument over who was eligible to ask for food stamps on behalf of their children.

A caller alleged they were an employee of the Sheriff’s Office and that if they were not paid over the phone, they would be arrested. Scam callers frequently spoof the local sheriff’s office or highway patrol number in order to make the call appear authentic. Most sheriff’s departments do not ask people to provide personal or financial information over the phone. If you receive a call from someone saying you have an active arrest warrant or that you failed to supply a secondary DNA sample and you must pay, it’s a scam.

On February 8, 2020, at approximately 9:05 pm, Clayton Nelson, 44, of Lenox, was headed west on Highway J23 (170th) near Yellowstone Avenue. Nelson's 2007 Ford F-250 had a mechanical failure, which caused the vehicle to enter the north ditch. The truck rolled and came to rest on its top. Nelson and four passengers suffered injuries. Two occupants were ejected from the truck and one was pinned underneath the vehicle. Nelson was taken by Ringgold County EMS to the Ringgold County Hospital with undisclosed injuries. Two passengers were flown to Des Moines area hospitals with undisclosed injuries: Angela Jenkins, 33, of Lenox and Zachary Marxen, 21, of Corning. Additionally, Cedric Nelson, 19, of Lenox was taken to Greater Regional Medical Center for injuries, and Brylee Van Gelder, 21, of Lenox was transported to Ringgold County Hospital for treatment. A four year old female was transported by private vehicle with minor bumps and bruises.
On February 8th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office says that a vehicle driven by Tessia Rinehart (28) of Mount Ayr was backing out of a driveway when she didn’t see a vehicle driven by Myrna Thatcher (74) of Creston on Madison Street in Mount Ayr. Both vehicles sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.
On February 9th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office investigated the unattended death of Richard Graham (81) of Benton. No foul play is suspected.

Cynthia Butler, 37, of Bedford, was charged with Controlled Substance Violation, possession of more than five grams of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, a class B felony. Butler is being held without bond pending an appearance before the Magistrate.
Subsequently, another arrest was made:
Elmer Harwell, 44, of Bedford, was charged with Controlled Substance Violation, possession of more than five grams of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, a class B felony. Harwell is being held without bond pending an appearance before the Magistrate.

Mustang Girls Escape DeKalb by Skin of Teeth; Jadon Dobbins has 14 Assists in Win
North Nodaway escaped DeKalb by the skin of their teeth last Tuesday, and Jadon Dobbins turned in what may have been a record performance, getting 14 assists in the 53-50 win.
DeKalb had beaten North Nodaway via the running clock in Ravenwood in December. However, Mustang coach Sami Jackson has always been one of the toughest coaches to beat twice, and this year has been no exception. Among successful revenge games the Mustangs have won this year include DeKalb, St. Joseph Christian (twice), and Rock Port (twice).
DeKalb scored the first five points of the game, but North Nodaway fought back to tie it at 5-5 as Jacquelyn Cline had a drive, Karissa Oberhauser had a free throw, and Kandace Damgar got loose in transition.
From there, North Nodaway played their best 12 minute stretch of the year. Kandace Damgar had 15 points in the period, and Jadon Dobbins was getting the ball to the open person at will.
The Mustangs scored the first eight points of the second quarter. DeKalb kept it close until the final 2:34 of the second, when back to back threes by Jacquelyn Cline put the Mustangs up 24-11. Back to back threes by Damgar put the Mustangs up in front 30-11 before Ashton Crockett’s free throw cut it to 30-12 at the half.
For some reason, DeKalb’s best player, Baylee Knorr, did not play the first half. She started the second half, and DeKalb switched from a zone to a man. At first, it didn’t matter as Karissa Oberhauser scored off a backdoor pass from Jadon Dobbins and Karissa Oberhauser hit Jacquelyn Cline for three to make it 35-12. Rebecca Reagan’s 3-pointer cut it to 38-19, but Damgar hit yet another 3-pointer and Karissa Oberhauser scored from the right side to make it 43-19.
But all of a sudden, it was like a light switch flipped on and Knorr started working the post at will as the Tigers finally started hitting their shots. Sharpshooter Madison Dittemore got loose and hit a 3-pointer and DeKalb put on their vaunted press, getting the deficit down to 44-31 at the end of three.
With DeKalb, one of the most dangerous teams to play against, putting on their press, they continued their charge to start the fourth and North Nodaway was having trouble even getting the ball inbounds. By the 6:42 mark, the lead was down to 44-37 before Jacquelyn Cline temporarily restored order with a 3-pointer to make it 47-37 with 4:27 left.
Cline scored off a drive to make it 11 at 51-40 with 2:15 left, but then Dittemore hit an NBA 3-pointer to resurrect DeKalb’s chances again. DeKalb had a bunch of fouls to give and could afford to be very aggressive on defense, as they were only at four team fouls with a minute left. Knorr’s free throws cut it to 51-45, and then she added a putback to make it 51-47 before North Nodaway finally got in the bonus and Kandace Damgar made two free throws to make it 53-47 with 36 seconds left.
But then DeKalb got a fourth chance look at a 3-pointer from Knorr with 8.8 seconds left as they were beating North Nodaway to every offensive board and the lead was down to 53-50. DeKalb then got a steal, but then Jadon Dobbins made the biggest play of the game when she stuffed Dittemore’s game-tying three, which rolled out of bounds to give the Tigers another chance. DeKalb got it to Knorr, but her heavily contested three-pointer was long and off the heel of the rim as time expired.
Turnovers and missed boxouts helped fuel DeKalb’s run in the second half. North Nodaway turned the ball over 18 times and gave up 18 offensive rebounds to DeKalb.

DeKalb had beaten North Nodaway via the running clock in Ravenwood in December. However, Mustang coach Sami Jackson has always been one of the toughest coaches to beat twice, and this year has been no exception. Among successful revenge games the Mustangs have won this year include DeKalb, St. Joseph Christian (twice), and Rock Port (twice).
DeKalb scored the first five points of the game, but North Nodaway fought back to tie it at 5-5 as Jacquelyn Cline had a drive, Karissa Oberhauser had a free throw, and Kandace Damgar got loose in transition.
From there, North Nodaway played their best 12 minute stretch of the year. Kandace Damgar had 15 points in the period, and Jadon Dobbins was getting the ball to the open person at will.
The Mustangs scored the first eight points of the second quarter. DeKalb kept it close until the final 2:34 of the second, when back to back threes by Jacquelyn Cline put the Mustangs up 24-11. Back to back threes by Damgar put the Mustangs up in front 30-11 before Ashton Crockett’s free throw cut it to 30-12 at the half.

Shamrock Girls Win Breather, Down Bobcats
North Harrison’s girls shrugged off a setback in King City and got back on the winning track Wednesday against winless East Harrison in a makeup game as they won 56-19. East Harrison came into the game looking for their first win, but Emma Craig scored the first 12 points of the game for North Harrison as they got out to a 12-5 lead in the early going. She was able to go coast to coast, post up, drive at will, and she even stepped back and took a 3-pointer. Kami Gibson took a pass in the high post and drove for a layup as time expired to give the Shamrocks a 17-5 lead after one.
Camie Vaughn kept the orange shirts in the game during the second, as she was able to post up at will and get some good looks. She got 10 points in the first half and 12 in the game. But North Harrison pulled away more slowly, getting four more from Craig and four from Kami Gibson. Kami hit Ashlynn Gilpatrick with a backdoor layup as time expired and North Harrison beat the buzzer for the second time, getting a 27-11 halftime lead.
The second half was a totally different half for the Shamrocks, as they were able to cut down on their turnovers and gave up fewer offensive boards. They turned the ball over 11 times in the first half, but only 5 times in the second half. They gave up 7 offensive boards in the first half, but only 2 in the second half.
The result was that they were able to put together a 22 point third quarter and put the game away. Rainey Fordyce, who ran the floor well all night, hit Emma Craig on the left wing and then got behind the Bobcat defense after a Camden Castleberry steal to push it up to 20 at 31-11.
The Bobcats hung around until the 4:52 mark of the third, but then Kami Gibson, unafraid of anyone, drove into the teeth of the Bobcats’ big front line of Camie Vaughn and Hope Ellsworth and finished it to make it 36-15. The second spark occurred when the orange shirts were taking it down the right side of the floor and Rainey Fordyce took a perfect charge. The contact was so hard that she rolled over on the floor once after she fell, but she sprung up like a jack in the box after the play. Then, Jayliegh Robins, who was plunked in the face with an errant ball during pregame warmups and got a cut above her nose and was badly shaken up, suddenly came out of nowhere, getting behind the Bobcats at will, and reeled off eight points in the last 4:12 of the third quarter. Everybody sensed her heating up during that stretch; four different Shamrocks fed her the ball.
In an echo of Wednesday night’s game, Jayliegh got her head stepped on by Mercer’s Tori Meiniecke in North Harrison’s 50-38 win over Mercer Friday and still recovered to score double figures.

Anna Gladstone, Bob Baker Named Courtwarming Royalty; Gladstone Goes Bezerk in 4th as Tigers Beat Albany Again; Regan Allee Honored for 1000th Point
Worth County’s girls beat Albany 52-33 Thursday to take their Courtwarming game. Anna Gladstone and Bob Baker were named Courtwarming Royalty, and Anna went into bezerk mode in the fourth quarter to bring the victory home. Regan Allee was honored by Coach Les New for scoring her 1,000th point in the Stanberry Tournament.
Other candidates were Kaylee McElvain, Kristen New, Hayden Holmes, and Zayne Swope. Junior attendants were Megan Cassavaugh and Tim Richardson. Sophomore attendants were Cheyanne Fairchild and Jackson Smith. Freshman attendants were Taylor Sanders and Tucker Owens.
Crownbearers were Renae Gladstone, Gabbey Maudlin, Alexis Snead, Jace Mullock, Tate Rush, and David Wideman. Renae got to help crown her older sister, Anna.
A win by the Warriors would have vaulted them into a tie for first with Stanberry. As things stand, Worth County will take first place on tiebreakers in the GRC West and play Milan in the GRC Showcase in King City Saturday if they beat Pattonsburg Wednesday. A loss would mean they would play someone else. Albany had only one conference loss before Thursday, a 40-38 loss to Stanberry in December. Worth County had beaten Albany 62-34 in the Stanberry Tournament, but with a lot more at stake, the game was sure to be much better. Albany had beaten Braymer 42-38 the game before and were riding momentum coming into Thursday’s game; Braymer had beaten Worth County back at the start of January.
The game looked like a walk in the park for the Tigers at first as Megan Cassavaugh hit back to back jacks to start the game and Kaylee McElvain followed with another 3-pointer and Anna Gladstone added a drive to make it 11-0.
But then Gabby Newman got a chasedown stuff on Anna Gladstone following a steal and the game turned on a dime. Newman scored five of Albany’s seven points and the Warriors closed to within 13-7 after one.
Albany’s game plan was clear – don’t let either Anna Gladstone or Regan Allee beat them. They played a triangle and two on them when they were both on the floor and a diamond and one when one was on the bench. Albany was playing much better than they had last month; their post players were much more part of the offense. The Warriors were doing a much better job of picking up the ball after Worth County’s defensive boards, meaning much fewer transition looks.
Worth County switched from a man to man to their 1-3-1 trap at the start of the second, but Albany kept coming, closing to within 18-15 by the latter stages of the second quarter. But then Megan Cassavaugh hit Kaylee McElvain inside and Kristin New hit a cutting Jill Hardy to give Worth County some breathing room at 22-15 at the half.

Courthouse News for January 29th, 2020
On January 16, 2020 approximately 1847 hours Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls reporting a semi with an auger taking down powerlines in Tingley. Upon further investigation, there were powerlines and poles down south of Ellston on P64, through Tingley and just north of J20 on Highway 169. No injuries were reported at the time of the accident.
On January 17th, Livingston County Prosecutor Adam Warren filed charges against Ronald Parker (73) of Chula (MO) alleging Animal Abuse (Felony). Northwest Mo Info reported that the case involved the defendant putting several puppies in Ziploc bags, one in a trash bag, and sealing them inside a trash can with a lid on top.
On January 21st, Amanda Jean McDowell of Clarinda was arrested in Buchanan County on two Page County (IA) warrants. She is being charged with four counts Forgery and five counts Theft.
On January 21, 2020, Taylor County K9 Ciba was called to assist Ringgold County on a traffic stop in Diagonal. Snyder was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance- Methamphetamine 1st offense, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drug. Snyder was taken to Ringgold County and held without the ability to post bond until she is seen by a Magistrate.

On January 21st, Alan Davis (20) of Redding was northbound on Route P27, which was covered with snow and ice at around 8:18 am. He entered the southbound ditch with his 1994 Dodge Dakota and rolled over once, coming to rest on the passenger side. The vehicle was totaled, and no injuries were reported.
On January 22nd, Douglas Dennis (32) of Eagleville was charged in Harrison County with being a Fugitive from Out of State (Felony).

On January 23rd, a school bus driven by Daniel Walston (54) of Bedford struck a truck owned by John Ford (52) of Mount Ayr when it was traveling southbound in the Mount Ayr School parking lot on an icy surface. The rear end of the school bus slid on the ice and struck Ford’s truck. There were no injuries.
On January 23rd, a vehicle driven by Lowell Thalman (75) of Ellston (IA) was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 at around 2:14 pm getting ready to turn onto South Hayes Street in Ringgold County. He didn’t see a vehicle driven by Anthony Kinsey (24) of Cainsville at a stop sign and sideswiped him. There was minor damage to the vehicles and no injuries.
On January 24th, the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic disturbance in Mount Ayr. While there, they arrested Colton Wills (20) of Mount Ayr on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance (Felony), Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana. He was being held with no bond until seen by a magistrate.

On January 28th, the Gallatin Police Department reported that someone was passing a counterfeit $10 bill at the Dollar General there. It was marked, “For Motion Picture Use Only.” Previously, there were $100 bills circulating in Cameron with the same markings. Anyone with information should contact their local law enforcement.
On January 28th, Buchanan County Judge Patrick Robb sentenced Skylar Harrison (24) to 12 years for the robbery of a gas station in St. Joseph. KQ2 says he had previously been convicted of Burglary and Receiving Stolen Property in Nodaway County back in 2014.

Northwest Mo Info reported that the case involved the defendant putting several puppies in Ziploc bags, one in a trash bag, and sealing them inside a trash can with a lid on top.

Area Water Bodies on Impaired Water List
The following area bodies of water are on the DNR’s proposed Impaired Waters List for 2020:
The East Fork of the Grand River is listed due to e.coli. The Harrison County Lake is listed due to Mercury in fish tissue due to atmospheric pollution. In addition, the DNR newly listed the lake due to Chlorophyll-a in the water.
The Middle Fork is listed due to e.coli. Mozingo Lake, which supplies the City of Maryville, has been listed for 10 years due to Mercury in fish tissue.
New this year is Nodaway Lake, which is on the proposed 2020 list due to Chlorophyll-a.
The Nodaway River is listed due to e.coli. In Harrison County, the North Bethany City Reservoir is listed due to Mercury in fish tissue, and has been since 2010.
In Sheridan, the Platte River is listed due to e. Coli, and has been since 2010. In Harrison County, the Thompson River is listed due to e.coli.
