The highest number of area students in recent memory have made the Northwest Missouri State University Honor Roll for the Fall 2013 trimester. For Denver, Todd Harding made the President's Honor Roll. For Grant City, 11 different students made the honor roll for the trimester. They are Will Buffington (Academic), Cole Buffington (Academic), Keely Cook (Academic), Alaina Freeman (Academic), Brooke Gilland (Academic), Cody Green (Academic), Erik Groven (Academic), Kyler Hiatt (President), Jordan Hunt (President), Rebecca Moore (President), and Zach Ragan (Academic). From Parnell, two area students made the honor rolls. They are Brandy Runde (Academic) and Austin Thummel (Academic). From Ravenwood, three students made the honor rolls. They are Arianna Bredlow (Academic), Nichole Carlin (Academic), and Kateline Miller (Academic). From Worth, Don Gibson made the Academic Honor Roll. A total of 18 students in the Sheridan Express coverage area made the honor rolls at Northwest.
To be included on the Academic Honor Roll a student must carry a minimum
of 12 credit hours and attain a grade point average of 3.50 or above on
a 4.00 scale. Students named to the President's Honor Roll have
attained a perfect 4.00 GPA for the trimester.
Two area students graduated from Northwest during the Fall Trimester. Kyler Hiatt graduated with degrees in corporate rec/wellness, rec and park management, and psychology. Aaron Summers graduated with a degree in geology.

Obituary -- Naomi Ahlene Gilland Williams 1924-2014
Naomi Williams, 89, Lawrence, Kan., formerly of Laclede,
died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11,
2014, at Laclede United Methodist Church, Laclede, with Rev. Richard Casady and
Kevin Holloway officiating. Burial was in Parklawn Cemetery, Brookfield.
Memorials to Laclede United Methodist Church may be left at
the church or mailed to Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home, PO Box 496, Brookfield,
MO 64628.
Naomi Ahlene, was born June 21, 1924, in Allendale, daughter
of Dewey Lafayette and Edna Mae (Dickerson) Gilland. On August 21, 1945, she
married Edward E. Williams. He preceded her in death February 5, 1972.
Naomi was a graduate of Grant City MO High School and taught
school in Worth County, MO. She attended college in Maryville MO and Kirksville
MO. She also obtained a Secretarial Degree at the age of 48 and worked as
Secretary to the Director of the School of Nursing at San Juan College,
Farmington, NM, and later obtained her license in cosmetology. She was co-owner
and co-founder with her husband, Edward, in their business, Nu-Rest Bedding
Company in Laclede MO from 1949 until 1973. After she moved to Lawrence, KS in
1987 she worked at Weaver’s Department Store until her retirement in 2003. She
was an active member of the Laclede United Methodist Church where she taught
Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood for
over 50 years and Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer S. Brown,
Lawrence, KS, and Deborah Elaine Williams, and fiancé, Larry Lewis, Linn
Valley, KS; two sons, Lynn E. Williams, Albuquerque, NM, and Alan Williams,
Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren, Tiffany M. Brown, Marietta, GA, Kyle R.
Brown and wife, Teresa M.. Merriam, KS, Ashley (Brown) Ayala and husband,
Roberto, Jr., Lawrence, KS, and Lindsey (Williams, daughter of Lynn E.) Hagle and
husband, Andy, Seattle, WA; three great-grandchildren, Ava Madison and Evans
Roberto Ayala, Lawrence, KS, and Olivia Kaitlyn Brown, Merriam, KS; two
sisters, Patricia Hall, Pocatello, ID, and Mary Ellen Prater, St. Joseph, MO;
one brother, Jon Quentin Gilland, Albuquerque, NM; and a sister-in-law, Jessie
Gilland, Grant City, MO.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; her beloved
brother, George Dewey Gilland; and beloved son-in-law, Dr. Robert F. Brown.
Naomi was deeply loved by family and friends alike, and will
be greatly missed.
Obituary -- Eddie Costin 1924-2014
Lt. Col. Edward (Eddie) C. Costin, 89, died Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at his daughter Denett's home in Kansas City. He was born October 9th, 1924 in Grant City to Homer and Ollie Brandt Costin. He wed Auda Wilkinson on October 16, 1955, with whom he shared 58 years of blessed matrimony. To this union, five children were born. Eddie was a pilot and lifelong farmer who enjoyed spending time with his family and following his childrens' and grandchildrens' activities.
Eddie graduated from Grant City High School and attended one year at Northwest Missouri State College. He was part of the Greatest Generation, serving in the Army Air Corps, enlisting on April 9, 1943. He flew as a P-38 and P-51 fighter pilot in England with the 364th Fighter Group in World War II. He joined the Missouri Air National Guard in St. Joseph in August, 1954, flying B-26 bomber, T-33 jet, RF-84 reconnaissance, C-97 cargo, and KC-97 refueling aircraft. He retired in 1976 and later undertook a 17-year career as a pilot for Northwest Missouri State University. He flew over 50,000 hours during his 51 years in the air.
Eddie was a member and elder of the First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, and VFW Post. He served many years on the WCCC and REA boards.
Preceding him in death are his parents, and sister Margueret Campbell. He leaves behind his wife, five children: Coleen (Kenneth) Mullock of Parnell; Brenda (Craig) Lechman of Sterline, CO; Denett Costin of Kansas City; Fran (Rick) Frese of Grant City, and Ed Costin; grandchildren Dallas Mullock, Whitney Hamblen, Erin Moad, Cody Mullock, Makaya Lechman, Wyatt and Ethan Frese, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, January 13th from 6-8 pm with Funeral Service at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home. Interment at the Allendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Grant City Boy Scout Troop #62, VFW Post 2123, or American Legion Post 92.

Worth County After Prom Seeks Support
The Worth County After Prom committee is organizing the annual After Prom 2014 party at the Worth County School in Grant City. They are seeking donations and merchandise for the event. All cash donations will go towards providing entertainment and door prizes. Please make out all checks to Worth County R-III After Prom 2014. Prom will be held on May 3, 2014 this year. New Economic Developer Enjoys Relaxed Lifestyle
New Economic Developer Elizabeth Martz said that she enjoyed the relaxed lifestyle of Worth County after having lived in St. Joseph for 12 years. She introduced herself to Worth County Commissioners for the first time Monday. She said that she and husband, Superintendent Dr. Matt Martz, liked the friendly environment and planned to stay here until they retire. Ms. Martz plans to swing into her new duties right away, working on a wood chipper grant for the county as well as attending Great Northwest Days with the rest of Worth County's delegation in February. Clerk Roberta Owens said that the county didn't have the kind of infrastructure needed for a huge manufacturing plant, but that they were looking for more small businesses to locate here. Another project that Martz will work on is a Safe Routes to School program which will provide funding for sidewalks leading up to the school. Superintendent Dr. Matt Martz and Janice Borey are also working on the project. Commissioners and Martz also discussed ideas for the Business Directory as well as the county website.
The commissioners responded to a query regarding winter heating assistance. There are 10 Worth County families who are out of fuel assistance funds due to the extreme cold. The Red Cross will not help them out unless there is an actual disaster. Commissioners said that there were no funds in the budget for winter heating assistance.
Road & Bridge Foreman Jim Fletchall reported a bracket on the V plow needed fixing. He said that cost of rock this year could be 75 cents a ton higher this year.
Associate Circuit Judge Joel Miller submitted his office's budget request for this year. The state is transitioning to an electronic court system for all court systems in the state. It will cost an estimated $5,000 to $6,000 to get the courtroom ready. All filings will be done by computer. While the target date for implementation is 2015, Miller said that 4th Circuit Judge Roger Prokes wanted all of the circuits to get ready ahead of time. Judge Miller said that there were adequate funds that the court had collected over the years so that the county would not have to pay anything.
Commissioners spend much of the meeting focused on the budget. Jail keep will rise to an estimated $25,000 this year. The county is struggling with flat revenues and making small cuts in order to balance next year's budget. The county will not be rehiring a second clerk for Roberta Owens. Current custodian Leonard Roush is retiring in February and the county will drop that position to part-time to create more savings.

Worth County School Board Race Draws Interest
The Worth County School Board race has attracted interest this year. Four different candidates have filed as of Friday afternoon. They are Mary Jo Fletchall, Jeff Andrews, Tyler Steele, and Stephanie Hardy. The terms of Jeff Andrews, Richard Mullock, and Paul Tracy are up for reelection. Interested parties have until January 21st to file for municipal elections.
The Grant City Council race had not attracted interest as of Friday afternoon. The terms of Catherine Runde and Bruce Downing are up for reelection. No candidates had filed.
In the Worth County Convalescent Center election, incumbent Scott Houk has filed for reelection for the territory covering East Union and Greene Townships. The term of Kathy Miller is also up for reelection. She covers the territory of Middlefork and South Allen Townships.
