Obituary -- Eddie Costin 1924-2014

Lt. Col. Edward (Eddie) C. Costin, 89, died Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at his daughter Denett's home in Kansas City. He was born October 9th, 1924 in Grant City to Homer and Ollie Brandt Costin. He wed Auda Wilkinson on October 16, 1955, with whom he shared 58 years of blessed matrimony. To this union, five children were born. Eddie was a pilot and lifelong farmer who enjoyed spending time with his family and following his childrens' and grandchildrens' activities.

Eddie graduated from Grant City High School and attended one year at Northwest Missouri State College. He was part of the Greatest Generation, serving in the Army Air Corps, enlisting on April 9, 1943. He flew as a P-38 and P-51 fighter pilot in England with the 364th Fighter Group in World War II. He joined the Missouri Air National Guard in St. Joseph in August, 1954, flying B-26 bomber, T-33 jet, RF-84 reconnaissance, C-97 cargo, and KC-97 refueling aircraft. He retired in 1976 and later undertook a 17-year career as a pilot for Northwest Missouri State University. He flew over 50,000 hours during his 51 years in the air.

Eddie was a member and elder of the First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, and VFW Post. He served many years on the WCCC and REA boards.

Preceding him in death are his parents, and sister Margueret Campbell. He leaves behind his wife, five children: Coleen (Kenneth) Mullock of Parnell; Brenda (Craig) Lechman of Sterline, CO; Denett Costin of Kansas City; Fran (Rick) Frese of Grant City, and Ed Costin; grandchildren Dallas Mullock, Whitney Hamblen, Erin Moad, Cody Mullock, Makaya Lechman, Wyatt and Ethan Frese, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, January 13th from 6-8 pm with Funeral Service at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home. Interment at the Allendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Grant City Boy Scout Troop #62, VFW Post 2123, or American Legion Post 92.
