Sam Graves and the Republican Party continue to hammer away on their demands to drill for oil off shore and in the Alaskan National Wildlife Reserve, ANWR. The issue is being used to convince Americans that plentiful oil supplies are available, and we can continue our complacency regarding the need to conserve energy, and to find new sources of fuel. Sam speaks with determination on the subject, hoping to dupe American voters into believing that if we vote Republican, our energy worries will soon be over. Nothing is further from the truth!
We have learned that Sam Graves has accepted $61,583 from the oil industry, and supported the oil industry in 91% of selected votes. Sam suggests that gas prices will return to previous levels as soon as drilling in the ANWR and off shore is approved. It is general knowledge that any oil obtained by that route would not be available to consumers for up to 10 years!
Scientists tell us the total world-wide supply of oil was 2 trillion barrels before humans started using it. Since mid-nineteenth century the world has consumed nearly 1 trillion barrels of oil. The half that remains is the hardest to get, lowest quality oil. The United States passed its peak oil production, about 11 million barrels a day, in 1970, and has dropped steadily since then. In 2004 it ran just above 5 million barrels a day. Yet we consume roughly 20 million barrels of oil a day. Cheap oil prices will not return!

Letter to the Editor -- ANWR drilling for what?
Letters to the Editor are the opinions of the writers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Sheridan Express.
It’s regrettable that comments and a Letter to the Editor in today’s News Press indicate that there are still those who believe that oil prices will decrease if only drilling in the ANWAR would take place. It is well known that there are about 6 months supply of oil in the ANWAR and those limited supplies are not easily accessible. Oil and gas prices are not going down! We have reached the end of cheap oil. In additon, tax incentives to rich oil companies continue, and obviously contribute to high gas prices. Oil companies’ profits are now the highest in history!
It has been well documented that drilling for oil in that fragile, unique natural treasure would require extreme effort because the oil is not just sitting there waiting to be harvested. Oil reserves around the world are less and less accessible. George Bush seems to believe that drilling in the ANWAR can be done in an environmentally sound way. How is digging, draining, grading roads and running large equipment considered to be environmentally responsible? Once the big equipment, the manpower, the noise, the trash and all that is required to reach the oil attacks the area, that fragile environmental treasure will be destroyed. And for what? Six months’ supply of oil?! Then what? Will everyone line up to offer their back yards to be drilled in hopes that a few more drops of oil may be captured?!!
Americans must acknowledge that our addiction to oil cannot continue, like it or not. The environmental disaster we now face is proof that the oil culture is over, and unless we quickly change our consumerist, destructive ways, it will be too late to save this beautiful green planet that supports the health and welfare of the human species!
