Janet Kinsella, Lonee French Hired as Teachers for Worth County

The Worth County Board of Education hired Janet Kinsella as a fifth grade teacher for the upcoming school year along with Lonee French as a junior high math teacher. The board accepted the resignation of Rachel Lane as a fifth grade teacher effective at the end of 2024-25. The board hired Maddy Runde as a paraprofessional for the 25-26 school year and Josh Kollitz as a custodian. The school currently has openings for a full-time bus route driver, a full-time or part-time custodian, substitute teachers, substitute bus drivers, and substitute custodians.

The board reorganized for the upcoming term. Josh Fletchall and Brad Maudlin will serve new three year terms after they were unopposed at the last election. The board named Tish Warner as President, Amber Monticue as Vice-President, Amanda Gilland as Treasurer, and Abby Troutwine as Board Secretary for another year. 

Westbrook & Company was selected to provide financial audit services for the next three years.

Kindergarten and Pre-K parent meetings were conducted. School enrollment is expected to go up for next year as there are 27 new Kindergarten students expected for the upcoming school year.

Elementary Principal Chuck Borey reported that the PTO Carnival was a huge success and that teachers and staff helped out with games and ticket sales.

Three students, Kaeslyn Briner, Chase Davidson, and Jace Mullock, did the Math Contest. Kaeslyn and Chase qualified for the district math contest in St. Joseph on April 5th and Kaeslyn qualified for State, which will be held in May.

Seven families made it to the Pre-K parent meeting and 23 of the 27 Kindergarten families made it to the Kindergarten meeting. All of next year's Pre-K and Kindergarten students were present to be screened.

The High School STEM class came to the Kindergarten classroom to teach about making and marketing a product to customers. They got to show off the toy tops that they made.

Haley and Rebecca from First Interstate Bank came and talked with the kids about coins and how to spend and save money. 

Pre-K and Kindergarten will be going to St. Joseph May 1st. Fourth through sixth grades will be going to Day at the K on May 8th. First through third grades will be going to the Science Center at Des Moines on May 14th. 

MAP testing will start April 28th.

Fifth graders will be going to a fishing clinic on May 14th at the Seat Conservation area.

The Elementary Spring Concert will be May 7th at 6 pm at the High School Gym.

The Elementary Track and Field meet will be Friday, May 9th starting at 9 am.

A Heart Hero Cosmic Party will be May 12th for Pre-K through 5th grade students who raised $25 or more. A total of $7,414.80 was raised for the American Heart Association. The top five, Finn Sherer, Hadley Downing, Cooper and Carson Riley, Rylie Davidson, and Alaina Roush will get to have pizza beforehand and will be joined by local law enforcement. As a reward for raising the most money, Finn will get to pick a hair color for Mr. Borey for a day. As a reward for having the most kids sign up, Mrs. Lischer's class will get to pick a hair color for Ms. Anita for a day.

A parade will be held around the square May 13th for the students who met their AR goals and/or turned in their reading incentive papers all year long. There will be one or two floats that will take the kids up around the square escorted by the police and fire departments. 

Students who score 90% or higher on effort on all MAP testing sessions will have a party on May 13th from 12:30 to 2 pm. 

An Honor Roll party will be at the Skating Rink on May 15th from 1:15 to 2:45 pm.

Pre-K graduation will be May 15th at 6 pm at the Multipurpose Room.

End of Year awards will be on May 15th at the High School Gym from 8:30 to 9:30 am for K-3 and 10 am to 11 am for fourth through sixth grades. 

High School Principal Josh Smith reported on some of the activities students are doing in class. English I students are learning how to write research papers, including peer review and revisions. Speech students are writing and giving their speeches to their peers. Intro to Computer Science students are learning how to create graphics programs. 

The March attendance winners were the Sophomores with an attendance rate of 97.58%. They were followed by the eighth grade and the juniors.

High School End of Course testing will be April 23rd through 29th. The State FFA Convention will be April 23rd through 25th with the FFA Banquet April 30th. Senior Trip will be April 30th. Junior High MAP testing will be April 30th through May 12th. The Junior High and High School Spring Concert will be May 7th. Athletic Banquet and Senior Awards will be May 8th. Graduation will be May 11th. Junior High and High School Academic Awards will be May 16th. 

The board voted to pay Merry Spiers and Kelley Ross $2,025 each for teaching credit recovery for 7-12 students during summer school. The school will only offer credit recovery for 7-12 this year for summer school.
