Muskets Hope Continuity, Health Lead to Wins

The North/West Nodaway Muskets hope that continuity and health this year will lead to some wins. They have 17 out for football this year and hope to improve on their winless mark from last year. They dropped three close games last year.

Anthony Christian is back at the helm for his second year. Michael Trautz returns for his second year as an assistant. Brandon Phipps comes in as an assistant; he is the Athletic Director at West Nodaway and will coach basketball there.

Christian’s primary rule is, “No walking on my field.” The players seem to be taking it to heart and buying in after a winless season ended with a crushing 72-0 halftime defeat to East Atchison in districts. It took a while for people to buy in, but Christian said that a lot more people have been hitting the weight room during the offseason. He said that practices were much better than during the same time a year ago.

Last Tuesday, during the second day of practice, they were doing blocking drills, plays, and wide receiver drills to get themselves into shape. Christian said that Gabe Goff, who missed most of last year (knee), was completely healthy this year and that Wyatt O’Riley was going to be a force along the line this year. After trying three different people at quarterback last year, Karson Oberhauser looks to have that slot locked in this year.

Two of the best newcomers this year include Andrew Blackford, who comes in with a lot of athleticism, and Jordan Phillips, who made a nice catch during receiver drills with a defender in his face. Tyler Bix will compete for one of the skill positions, while Jordan Jenkins will return as a kick returner. Will Cordell showed some explosiveness on the line.

Christian said that teams to watch this year would be Mound City, East Atchison, and LeBlond. “They have someone in Eric Fairchild, who knows how to coach eight man, so he’ll be able to show them the ropes,” said Christian.
