Late Notice – Dwayne McClellan

Worth County grad Dwayne McClellan passed away Monday in Salem (MO). He got his start working for the Times-Tribune in 1981, covering the first-ever football playoff team for the Tigers, chronicling the excitement of beating Princeton and King City and the heartbreak of falling to Nodaway-Holt in the playoffs, in front of one of the biggest crowds in school history.

From there, he joined the Salem News in 1984, where he wrote news, feature stories, and sports until his health deteriorated after 2012. In 2014, he retired due to medical reasons.

“Dwayne is a legend in Salem,” said Donald Dodd, owner and publisher of The Salem News in their paper. “When you are a writer at a small-town newspaper, everyone knows you because you took their picture, put their name in the paper and wrote about their lives. Dwayne not only did that, but loved it and did so with a passion. Nothing made him happier than to bump into a former Tiger or Lady Tiger and have them tell him how much they appreciate what he did. He literally chronicled their lives. There is no telling how many copies of his stories are in scrapbooks, providing memories for a lifetime.”
