Panthers Advance to District Finals, Down North Shelby

Pattonsburg’s Panthers continued to cruise through the semifinal round of districts, beating North Shelby 66-12 Friday. The Raiders, in their third year of playing eight man football, posted their best season since moving down, finishing with a 7-4 record after an up and down season. They will return most of their players next year, so they still have room for improvement.

Steven Willhite continued to click at quarterback for the Panthers, finishing with 20 completions in 22 attempts for 276 yards and five scores. Cameron Jones completed one pass attempt for 24 yards and Kaden De Jong completed 3 out of his 6 passes for 80 yards.

The Panthers passed for 380 yards and ran for another 71 yards. Willhite ran 7 times for 42 yards, while Cameron Jones had 2 carries for 29 yards. They had 451 total yards.

Seven different receivers caught passes, while five caught at least one pass for 20 yards. Patrick Cowley was the big gun for Pattonsburg, catching 7 catches for 169 yards. Trevor Ireland had 6 catches for 51 yards, Cameron Jones 4 catches for 55 yards, Brett Emig 2 catches for 22 yards, Dakota Eaton 2 catches for 70 yards along with a kickoff return for a touchdown, Collin Briggs 2 catches for 13 yards, and Carter Crone 1 catch for 1 yard.

Defensively, Dakota Eaton had 12 tackles for the Panthers. Carter Crone had 11, after having 16 against Albany two weeks before. Collin Briggs, only a sophomore, had one of his best games as a Panther with 9 tackles. Cameron Jones had 6, as did Logan Craig. Craig, who had just gone out for football for the first time this year, showed he was getting better every single time, as he moved up the tackle charts. Lane Huitt had 5, Gavin Garrett had 5, Logan Huitt 4, Kyle McChesney 4, Blake Hulett 4, Trevor Ireland 3, Patrick Cowley 3, Connor Ireland 2, Ryelin Hulet 2, Skylar Todd 2, Clark Adler 2, and Kaden De Jong 1. The Panthers saw 17 different players record at least one tackle.

Pattonsburg had 10 tackles for loss. Gavin Garrett had 2, while Trevor Ireland, Kaden De Jong, Kyle McChesney, Dakota Eaton, Collin Briggs, Logan Craig, Lane Huitt, and Clark Adler all had 1. Gavin Garrett had 2 sacks, while Logan Craig and Skylar Todd had 1. Collin Briggs forced 1 fumble, and Carter Crone had a fumble recovery.

The Panthers host Southwest Livingston Friday at 7 for the District Title game. Pattonsburg lost to Southwest last year. If Pattonsburg wins, then where they play depends on who wins between Worth County and Stanberry. If Worth County wins, Pattonsburg travels to Worth County, since the Tigers have hosted fewer home playoff games. If Stanberry wins, Pattonsburg hosts Stanberry, since Pattonsburg is on the lower side of the bracket. If Southwest wins, they would host regardless of who wins between Worth County and Stanberry.
