Dylan McIntyre scored 14 first-half points and Northeast Nodaway’s boys held off Worth County’s attempts to get back in the game, posting a 39-24 win Thursday. The rebounding was close as Worth County was able to mix it up with Northeast despite giving up some size. But NEN was able to put more defensive pressure on, getting 18 tips and 14 steals compared to 4 tips and 6 steals for Worth County, forcing them out of their rhythm.
After Tyler New scored all of Worth County’s points in the first half, the rest of the players were able to get on the scoreboard, allowing Worth County to make some charges at Northeast in the second half, but they could never get closer than 13.
McIntyre got 9 points in the first quarter, getting loose in transition three different times, while Alex Mattson added six, with two shots from behind the arc. That got Northeast an 18-5 lead after one. Worth County’s only scores came when Tyler New got loose in transition once and dropped a triple from the top of the key off a pass from Elias Alarcon.
In the second, Alex Mattson started the scoring with a fast break and hesitation move that he turned into a free throw. Dylan McIntyre went coast to coast to make it 21-5 before New’s pullup made it 21-7. McIntyre got loose inside and got a pass from Mattson, Jadin DeFreece got loose in transition and got a pass from McIntyre, McIntyre took on three and got to the line, where he hit a free throw, and Grant McIntyre got loose inside to make it 28-7 before New’s putback made it 28-9 at the break.
Tyler New got loose in transition to start the scoring for Worth County. Alex Mattson picked up his fourth foul early in the third for Northeast, which seemed to take away some of their aggression, and the rest of Worth County’s players started getting on the board, starting with an inside shot from Jon Galanakis. Levi Cassavaugh went coast to coast for another basket and Elias Alarcon faked a defender out and took a dribble before hitting a long two to cut it to 32-17 after three.
NEN reasserted themselves in the fourth as Dylan McIntyre went coast to coast and then kept another possession alive with an offensive glass, leading to Alex Mattson’s pass to Grant McIntyre for a drive and three point play to make it 37-17. Worth County countered with a 3-pointer from Elias Alarcon and four straight from Tyler New to get it as close as 37-24 before Jadin DeFreece’s putback with 30 seconds left provided the dagger for Northeast.
For the Bluejays, Dylan McIntyre had 18 points. Alex Mattson had 7, Grant McIntyre 6, Jadin DeFreece 4, and Zach Pride and Boston Adwell 2.
McIntyre had a double double as he added 13 boards to go with his 18 points. Jadin DeFreece had 9, Alex Mattson had 4, Grant McIntyre and Zach Pride 3, Boston Adwell 2, and Brendon Deardorff 1.
Alex Mattson had 3 assists for Northeast. Dylan McIntyre had 2, while Boston Adwell, Grant McIntyre, Jadin DeFreece, and Brendon Deardroff had 1 each.
Zach Pride had 6 steals for Northeast. Alex Mattson had 4, Grant McIntyre 3, and Dylan McIntyre 1.
