Worth County’s junior high girls pulled away in a big second quarter to beat North Harrison 37-15 last Monday night. Most of the players were the same as last year, when North Harrison beat Worth County twice. But the outcome was completely reversed this time, as Worth County outrebounded North Harrison, took care of the ball, and went to Ali Brown in the post at will.
The game started off as a defensive struggle, with inside shots from Ali Brown and Alison Anderson countered by three free throws from Jayliegh Robins as Worth County led 4-3 at the 1:41 mark. But then Robins picked up her second foul and didn’t come back in until the three minute mark of the second quarter. Despite Hailey Adwell and Madelyn Runde picking up three fouls each, Worth County was never in trouble as seventh grader Kynah Steele was the best player on the court, getting the ball into Brown and Anderson at will and chipping in from outside. Worth County was able to bring the ball up against North Harrison’s swarming defense, which swiped 25 against Pattonsburg in the previous game.
With Robins out, Worth County started feeding Ali Brown early and often; Steele added a putback and Kara Staton hit a free throw as Worth County led 19-3 at the 3:28 mark of the second quarter. Robins came back in, but the damage was done and Worth County added a putback from Anderson and a drive from Elizabeth Brown to make it 23-3 at the half.
Robins got going in the third and chipped in four and Baily Briggs two for North Harrison, but Worth County continued to pull away thanks to the steady ballhandling of Steele, who scored four in the period. Brown and Anderson each chipped in two more and Taylor Sanders got on the board with a high post shot as Worth County led 33-9 after three. Kara Staton’s drive gave Worth County its biggest lead at 35-9 to start the fourth.
