Worth County Featured in Statewide Podcast

On October 31st, Worth County was featured on the podcast and website Show Me Missourah, which features each county in the state. They interviewed Vickie Miller, Economic Developer Gene Auten, and Ben Abplanalp. They talked about the history of Worth County, including its founding, the Native American tribes who once lived here, the first settlers, and the history.

One of the stories they told happened when the second courthouse burned. The first courthouse was built in 1863 for a cost of $600. The second, bigger courthouse lasted for a little over 30 years before it got burned down as well. When the second courthouse burned, they had a deer field dressed and ate it after the fire was put out. In 1899, the third and current courthouse was built.

During the Square Fire of 2011, there were fears that it would spread to the Courthouse and catch it on fire as well. At the recent Candidates’ Forum, Recorder of Deeds Barb Foland recounted how she moved her records over to the Fairgrounds Building.

The podcast and story are both accessible at https://showmemissourah.com/. Show Me Missourah is also accessible on Facebook.
