Morehouse Cemetery West of Hopkins Being Restored Using Goats

The Morehouse family is in the process of restoring their family cemetery southwest of Hopkins using goats. As an alternative to spraying, they elected to use goats instead. Storm Dancer Farm, located between Kansas City and Smithville, supplied the goats.

The family came from Ohio to Nodaway County in the 1850’s and purchased land from the government. There used to be nothing but prairie chickens and buffalo. They cleared the land, built roads, and established farms to give each other a hand when needed. They fought in the Civil War on the side of the Union Army. One became a circuit judge and another became the father of a Missouri governor.

Kathryn (Morehouse) Paulsen and her family came to the plot during the last week of October and brought the goats to graze on the area. They will be back in spring to do some more restoration work.
