Junior High Tigers Nearly Shut Out Bluejays

Worth County’s junior high girls nearly shut out Northeast Nodaway, posting a 32-1 victory Thursday. Worth County used the same formula that they used against North Harrison – dominate the boards, and the rest would follow. The Tigers outrebounded NEN by a lopsided margin, 44-13. Both sides were able to put a lot of defensive pressure on each other, but the taller Tigers had their way on both sides of the glass.

The margin was 8-0 and Worth County already had a 13-2 advantage on the boards when NEN coach Linda Mattson called timeout and did the Chinese Fire Drill, taking five out and putting five in. For the rest of the game, the effort was much better on Northeast’s part, but Worth County continued to pull away. They were able to keep up with Worth County on the floor and put defensive pressure on them, getting 19 steals and 19 tips. But it was not enough.

Ali Brown scored 9 of Worth County’s 11 in the first quarter as the Tigers led 11-0 after one. Four different Tigers chipped in during the second; Kynah Steele had a backdoor look, Madelyn Runde scored off a lob from Steele, Ali Brown got into double digits after Alison Anderson got a defensive board and pushed it up the floor, and Taylor Sanders threw up a runner to make it 19-0 at the half.
Worth County used their size in the third quarter to score eight more as Anderson hit from the high post, Brown got loose inside twice, and Steele got a third chance putback to make it 27-0.

The only tense point was whether Northeast would get on the scoreboard, and they finally did as Ruby Wilmes hit a free throw with 1:22 left to put them on the board.

For Worth County, Ali Brown had 15, Kynah Steele 6, Alison Anderson 4, Madelyn Runde 2, Taylor Sanders 2, Kara Staton 2, and Autumn Cousatte 2.

Kynah Steele had 3 blocks for the Tigers. Ali Brown had 2, and Alison Anderson and Elizabeth Brown had 1 each.

Kynah Steele, although not the leading scorer and not the tallest player on the floor, has made everyone around her better; she had 12 boards. Ali Brown had 11, Alison Anderson 9, Hailey Adwell 6, Madelyn Runde 2, Autumn Cousatte 2, and Taylor Sanders 2.

Steele also had 5 assists for the Tigers after also having 5 against North Harrison. Alison Anderson had 2, Madelyn Runde 1, and Kara Staton 1.

Taylor Sanders and Kynah Steele had 4 steals each for the Tigers. Kara Staton had 3, while Alison Anderson, Hailey Adwell, Madelyn Runde, Elizabeth Brown, and Ali Brown all had 2. Autumn Cousatte had 1.
