Kenneth Wilson Kent Jr., age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at KU Medical Center.
Kenny was born July 11, 1932 to Mary (Andrews) and Kenneth Kent Sr., right here in Worth County. The family drove all the way from Oklahoma so Doc Andrews could deliver his grandson. Kenny was a 1950 graduate of Classen High School in Oklahoma City. He went on to attend Oklahoma State University, where his enthusiasm for the Cowboys grew to an obsession. This is where our legacy began because a cute Pi Beta Phi took a chance on a handsome Sigma Alpha Epsilon and their budding love turned into a lasting legacy. Kenny and JoAnn (Ewing) were united in marriage on February 17, 1955 in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the First Christian church. They were lifelong loves and were married for 58 years.
Just days after their wedding Kenny left for his tour of service in the United States Army and reported to Nuremberg, Germany, JoAnn came a year later. Kenny proudly served as Commander and Chief in Germany from 1955-1957. Kenny committed 32 years of service, closing out his commitment as a member of the National Guard.
Although an Oklahoma boy, Kenny spent many childhood summers in northwest Missouri helping his granddad on the farm. He loved the farm so much, and he and JoAnn made it their home for all these years. Papa and Mimi’s farm became the gathering place that everyone longed to be and loved as much as he did.
Kenny worked for Production Credit Association for 25 years and retired from Bank Midwest in 2000. Kenny’s real passion was farming, which he never retired from.
Kenny was a proud member of Albany’s United Methodist Church for 61 years and thoroughly enjoyed teaching Sunday school for 30 of them. Kenny’s faith was an inspiration to all around him, and many looked to him for comfort and guidance.
Kenny always enjoyed supporting his community, serving on many boards and organizations, including the Worth County Water District and the Soil and Water Conservation Board; and being a member of the Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge, and the American Legion.
Kenny will forever be remembered by his two children, David Kent of Albany, Missouri and Sidney & Doug Braswell of Dubuque, Iowa. His four grandchildren, Jackie (Brian Nail) Burke of Gilman City, Vanessa (Jason) Taggart of Gilman City, Ryan (Josh) Feller of Bellevue, Iowa and Tyller Kenneth (Michelle) Braswell of Charlotte, Iowa. His cherished great grandchildren, Ericka and Alli JoAnn, Khale and Emily, and Hailey and Ava Jean.
Also those remembering him is special niece Diane Mombaini and family and Sister in law Linda Cameron and family.
Those who passed before Kenny are his loving bride JoAnn, sister JoAnn Kenney, brother in law Randy Cameron and sister in law Shirley Ewing Pratt.
A special thanks to Reverend Bendi Burgin for all her love and support, as well as Kenny’s many friends. We are grateful for the medical compassion from the staff and doctors at KU Medical Center’s Burn Unit.
