Worth County Likely to Move Up Following Cards’ Defeat

Worth County is likely to move up following the toppling of North Andrew. Everything that could have gone wrong for the Cardinals did go wrong as their team bus had a tire blowout and the game in Sedalia didn’t start until 8 pm. The game was still in progress at 11 that night, and it was a long bus ride home for the Cardinals. North Andrew, which was ranked first in the Missouri Eight Man Coaches Association rankings, fell to #6 Sacred Heart 86-48. North Andrew will have to get something figured out in a hurry, as they face Stanberry Friday.

The #2 ranked Stanberry squad did about as expected with Pattonsburg. They were up 60-30 over the upstart Panthers at the half. But as usual, they are one of the best second half teams in the area and their two-headed monster of Cole Durbin and Trey Schieber were too much for the Panthers as they fell 90-42.

Worth County held off an early challenge against #8 King City and ended the game at halftime, 80-20. Their next opponent, St. Joseph Christian, has been kryptonite for Worth County over the years; despite their 1-4 start this year, they have played everyone tough. Christian always seems to peak in the second half of the year. But on the other hand, Worth County has not lost a Homecoming game since 2004 and only one since 1993, so something has to give in Friday night’s game. This includes some games which the Tigers were not “supposed” to win.

One game that was supposed to be close wasn’t. #4 Rock Port started off with a safety and then things went from bad to worse for #5 East Atchison. Jase Hughes then connected with passes of 68 and 65 yards with Ryan Dewhurst, and the rout was on. By the time the carnage was over, Rock Port had come away with the 50-0 halftime win. Hughes threw 16 times, completing 11 for 284 yards. Dewhurst caught 6 passes for 222 yards. Caden Linthicum had three carries for 88 yards, including a 63 yard scoring run. East Atchison has frequently punched above their weight against Rock Port even as they have fallen short, but this time, they crashed and burned. East Atchison will have to get something figured out, as they play Mound City next.

#7 Mound City had little trouble with North/West Nodaway, winning 50-0 in the third quarter. #9 Greenfield had little trouble with Marmaton Valley (KS), winning 52-20. #10 Hardin-Central faced a stiffer challenge against Braymer, but came away with the 52-32 victory.

St. Joseph Christian picked up their first win of the season, 56-18 over winless Albany. They are Worth County’s next opponent. They are 1-3, but have been in all their games. They went the distance against North Andrew, lost by three scores to Pattonsburg, and were tied in the fourth quarter against Stanberry before fading. South/Nodaway-Holt had little trouble with winless DeKalb as Eric Ottman threw a 41 yard pass to Reagan Morris and the rout was on in Oregon and the Spartans won 50-0 in the third quarter. Platte Valley could not get their first win of the season as they fell to North Shelby 62-42. Southwest Livingston beat Stewartsville 52-20 as the Cardinals continue to be on the downslide following their win to open the season.

Worth County has moved ahead in district standings despite Rock Port’s win over East Atchison. They are #1 in district standings with 47.21 points. Rock Port is #2 with 46.42 points, Stanberry at #3 with 46.33, East Atchison #4 with 40.05, North/West Nodaway in fifth with 21.79 points, and Albany at #6 with 15.42.

If the districts were to be held this Friday, Worth County and Rock Port would get byes in the first round, while Stanberry faces Albany and East Atchison faces North/West Nodaway. Worth County would face the East Atchison and North/West Nodaway winner while Rock Port would face the winner of Stanberry and Albany.
