Worth County faced a stiffer challenge than their first three games, but still pulled away for an 80-20 halftime victory over King City. In so doing, they set a school record for the most points ever scored in a half (80). The previous record was set in 2011, when Worth County tagged Craig/Fairfax with a 70-0 victory during its last state championship run, when Eli Mullock was in his senior year.
2011 was the last year for the CFX cooperative; Craig is now a cooperative with Mound City while Tarkio and Fairfax have formed the East Atchison cooperative. The coach for the CFX cooperative wanted to play on in the 70-0 debacle, but Craig Walker, the principal at Craig at the time, stopped the game. He had been on the North Andrew sideline two years before when Worth County had the Cardinals down 48-8 before North Andrew scored three times against Worth County’s JV with their varsity. Subsequently, the 275 Conference passed a rule requiring teams to end the game on the 45 point rule. The GRC, of which Worth County is now a part, does not have such a rule.
King City tried to take control of the game with an onsides kick, but Brayden Welch recovered it at the 39. Ryan McClellan picked up five and Isaac Alarcon 7 to the Wildkat 29. Tevin Cameron broke two King City tackles down to the 15 and two more carries got him into the end zone with 10:13 left. Isaac Alarcon rumbled into the end zone, shaking off defenders like they weren’t even there to make it 8-0.
It didn’t take King City to respond as Collin Breckinridge aired it out to Wyatt Vannaman from 40 yards out just 18 seconds later to make it 8-6. Bryant McCord ran back the ensuing kick to the Tiger 38 and Tevin Cameron followed the blocking of Colton Wilmes to the King City 31. He broke tackle after tackle for 11 more to the 20, then went straight up the middle for 15 more to the 5.
King City sought to make a stand there as Jacob Moen turned into a force, running wild in the backfield and holding Worth County to no gain for the next two plays. But then Cameron took a counter for five yards with 8:39 left and followed the blocking of Isaac Alarcon for the two points to make it 16-6.
This time, Worth County made it look easy after recovering a squib kick at their own 29. King City formed a gold wall to stop Cameron on Worth County’s first play from scrimmage, but he shot through it anyway and took it 51 yards to the house with 8:03 left. He once again followed Isaac Alarcon’s blocking to make it 24-14.
King City tried to air it out to get back into the game, but it was unsuccessful and Worth County held. Caleb Parman and Tevin Cameron broke up passes, the latter coming after Drake Kinsella hurried Collin Breckenridge. On the ensuing punt, Tevin Cameron ran the punt all the way back to the King City 20. Tevin Cameron and Isaac Alarcon each picked up 8 to the four for first and goal, but a holding and a false start set them all the way back to the 18. They got some of it back on Isaac Alarcon’s seven yard jaunt, then Ryan McClellan cut it up for 3 more. Tevin Cameron fought his way forward for four for fourth and goal at the 4, then took it down the right side for the score with 4:56 left as Worth County finally got some separation. His cutback run made it 32-14.
King City pulled off a successful fake punt, but then back to back sacks by Tevin Cameron and Ryan McClellan killed the drive. Worth County got the ball back on its own 20, and Isaac Alarcon lost a yard on their first play. But then Ryan McClellan took a sweep down the left side, got a block from Mason Hawk on Moen that totally sealed off the defense, and McClellan sprung free for 61 yards with 35 seconds left in the first quarter. Jacob New’s pass to Bryant McCord made it 40-14.
Mason Hawk sacked Breckinridge on the next play, then Tevin Cameron had a big hit on him the next play along with Caleb Parman as King City went nowhere on its next possession. Worth County ran back the punt to the King City 29, got backed up by a holding penalty to their own 39, and then threw an incomplete pass. Cameron’s first run only picked up four to the 37, but then he shot up the middle and down the left side for a score with 9:44 left in the first half. He ran in the extra points to make it 48-14.
A long pass from Breckinridge to Vannaman for 21 yards set up another long pass to A.J. Saunders from 39 yards out for King City’s final tally with 8:43 left to make it 48-20. They tried an onsides kick, but this time, Brayden Welch made the most of his opportunity, running it back to the King City 35 and leveling Kinser Herbert at the end of the run. Isaac Alarcon’s cutback run went to the 19. A bad snap set Worth County back to the 25, but then Tevin Cameron took an early option pitch from Ryan McClellan down the right side for a score with 7:56 left. Isaac Alarcon rumbled in down the left side for the extra points to make it 56-20.
Breckinridge misfired on two passes and on third down, he came under heavy pressure from Mason Hawk and threw a pick to Bryant McCord, his second in the last two games. Three plays later, Ryan McClellan got a block from Drake Kinsella, ran down the left side, faked out Vannaman, and got in from 41 yards out with 6:48 left in the half. Tevin Cameron’s cutback run made it 64-20.
Devan Jackson pulled down Breckinridge by his jersey to get one sack and Drake Kinsella got another as King City was driven all the way back to the 9. The kick was short and Tevin Cameron took it from the King City 28 and ran it back for a score. Cameron followed the blocking of Isaac Alarcon with 5:08 left for the extra points to make it 72-20.
Once again, Devan Jackson got a sack and then Drake Kinsella broke up a screen pass to force King City to punt. The kick was short and out of bounds, giving Worth County a short field and Tevin Cameron shot up the middle for 35 yards and ran in the extra points for Worth County’s final tally with 3:43 left in the first half.
Worth County had 341 yards, all of them on the ground, for an average of 14.2 yards per carry. Tevin Cameron had 16 carries for 236 yards. Ryan McClellan had 4 carries for 108 yards, Isaac Alarcon 7 carries for 42 yards, Jeremy Wimer 2 carries for 3 yards, Andrew Alarcon 1 carry for 1 yard, and Jacob New 1 carry for -7 yards.
