North Nodaway Ends Four Game Skid with 10-4 Victory

North Nodaway broke a four game losing skid with a 10-4 victory over Northeast Nodaway, prompting some of the Mustang players to want to furnish future enemy teams with blue uniforms. It was a convincing beatdown of Northeast, which went the distance against North Nodaway but still fell short.

North Nodaway began their scoring with one out in the first, when Shai Dailey reached on an error, stole second, and took third on a wild pitch. Makayla Cross walked and stole second. Ashley Thompson struck out after a long battle with NEN pitcher Maggie Schmitz, but Emma Hart shot a single past short to score two. It would have been worse, but Kandace Damgar hit a screamer that third baseman Taylor Coffelt snagged for the third out.

Anne Schieber walked and went to second on a wild pitch for Northeast in the second, but could not do anything with it as Emily Redden hit a screamer that caromed off pitcher Keagan O’Riley’s glove. But second baseman Shai Dailey alertly picked it up and threw out Redden at first.

North Nodaway added to their lead in the third when Keagan O’Riley singled and stole second to lead off. Shai Dailey popped out to Redden at first, but Makayla Cross singled to left to put runners on first and third and Ashley Thompson singled to left to score O’Riley. Emma Hart grounded out for the second out, but Kandace Damgar singled up the middle to score two to make it 5-0.

Northeast finally got one run back in the fourth, thanks to two of their freshmen. With one out, Anne Schieber hit a pop fly that dropped in left and went to second on a wild pitch. Emily Redden was called out on strikes, but Madeline Mattson singled to left to bring her home to make it 5-1.

North Nodaway got two more in the fifth. Shai Dailey led off with a single up the middle and stole second. Makayla Cross walked. Ashley Thompson flied out to Anne Schieber in left, but Emma Hart walked to load the bases. Kandace Damgar singled to center to bring in two more runs to make it 7-1. Damgar drove in five of North Nodaway’s 10 runs that day.

Northeast couldn’t do anything in the sixth thanks to a couple of great defensive plays. Taylor Coffelt was plunked by a pitch to start off; she was picked off first, but took off for second and made it. Anne Schieber flied out and then Emily Redden hit a pop fly that center fielder Audrey Trimble made a shoestring catch of. Outfield had been a concern going into the season for North Nodaway, but Emma Hart and Audrey Trimble have anchored the left and center field positions for North Nodaway.

Madelynn Mattson singled, but Hart’s throw home got Taylor Coffelt trying to score from second as Northeast was denied in the sixth.

North Nodaway broke open the game in their half of the sixth. Keagan O’Riley reached on a throwing error from third baseman Taylor Coffelt and made it all the way to third. Shai Dailey hit a pop fly single just past new pitcher Blair Stoll to score her and stole second. Makayla Cross struck out as Stoll was able to freeze her on a check swing. But then Dailey went to third on a wild pitch. Ashley Thompson then reached on a wild pitch that should have been strike three, but got in the dirt and got away as Dailey crossed home. Emma Hart singled up the middle and a passed ball put runners on second and third. Kandace Damgar then reached on a fielder’s choice as Ashley Thompson’s takeout slide knocked the ball out of the catcher’s hand to make it 10-1.

Northeast had a last gasp in the top of the seventh. Down to their final out, Paige West started them off with a pop fly single to center. Maggie Schmitz dug out a low pitch and singled up the middle, while Makayla Adwell walked after a long battle to load the bases. Taylor Coffelt singled in two runs and Anne Schieber’s pop fly dropped in just behind second to score Adwell.
