Last Wednesday, March 6th, the Worth County chapter of Future Business Leaders of America ventured off to Des Moines for their annual field trip. The first stop on the field trip was the John Deere Des Moines Works factory in Ankney, IA. The students were pulled around the massive plant on a wagon while listening to a tour guide and watching the products go through the assembly line. The plant specializes in sprayers and cotton pickers, the cotton picker being one of John Deere's most expensive products costing almost $800,000. For lunch the group ate at Jordan Creek Mall and was able to do a bit of shopping while they waited for their final tour of the day. The last stop on the agenda was the Salisbury House & Gardens in the heart of Des Moines. The Salisbury house is a "42-room architectural wonder built between 1923 and 1928 by pioneer cosmetics magnate, Carl Weeks and his wife Edith modeled the House after King’s House in Salisbury England". The house has changed hands several times but now is held by the Salisbury House Foundation. During the tour the students walked through the mansion, heard the story of the Weeks and their entrepreneurial successes, and saw many artifacts that they collected during their reign. The oldest artifact dating back to 1500 B.C. The most expensive artifact was a painting nearing 4 million dollars in worth.
