Editorial -- Hats Off for Taking Care of the Flag

Sometimes, people do things not because they want to be noticed, but because it is the right thing to do. School custodian Jeannie Fletcher is one of those people. It doesn't matter how much work she has. But she regularly goes and takes down the flag flying in front of the school every night. She doesn't do it for show and she doesn't do it for the praise and applause. She does it because she cares for the school and being the custodian at the school is a labor of love for her. We were taking to board member Karen Fletchall about the school situation recently and she remarked that the school was fortunate to have both teachers and staff who did the right thing. When you decide to fly the American Flag, people will watch to see how you take care of it. Whether you leave it out in the rain and snow and ice or whether you take care of it, whether you keep it tattered and torn or whether you only fly flags in good condition, people will notice. Mrs. Fletcher did not do what she did to get noticed. But people have noticed anyway. And for doing the right thing, we salute her.
