McCaskill Calls out Postal Service Over Failure to Provide Answers on Five-Day Delivery

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today released the following statement after the U.S. Postal Service’s failure to provide answers in a timely manner concerning its proposed move to five-day delivery:

“Eliminating six-day delivery would impact families, small businesses and seniors in communities around the country—it’s not responsible to move forward with this drastic plan without knowing if it would even make a substantial difference in dollars saved. The Postal Service has the data we need, and it’s time for officials there to stop dragging their feet.”

More than six weeks ago, McCaskill requested information from the Postmaster General and Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) about the Postal Service's claims that it would realize substantial savings by moving to a five-day delivery modelclaims McCaskill has previously questioned.

McCaskill received a response from PRC Chairman Ruth Goldway in a meeting last week, but the PRC reported that it would “need the Postal Service to provide complete and updated data” in order to give an accurate estimate of cost savings. The response to McCaskill from the PRC is available on her website HERE.

Last year, McCaskill successfully fought to keep hundreds of rural post offices in rural Missouri open and operating. She has previously argued that shutting down rural post offices would not help the Postal Service achieve substantial cost-savings, and cutting Saturday mail delivery would deal significant blows to communities across rural America.
