Worth County School Board candidate Mary Jo Fletchall said that the school was entering a difficult financial period because of the sequester. She said that her accounting background would be an asset to the board as they grapple with balancing the budget over the next few years. She is one of five candidates running for school board in the April 2nd election.
She said that she believed in the school and the county and that she wanted to be as involved in the community as possible. She currently serves as the director of Community Services of Worth County. She said that the quality of education should be the school's first priority and that everything else should be secondary.
Fletchall had worked as an accountant in Kansas City. However, she said that she made a conscious decision to come back to Worth County because it offered the best educational opportunities for her two children, Trenton and Hannah McElvain. They are in 7th and 5th grade.
Fletchall is the daughter of Danny and Jolene Fletchall; Danny was born and raised in Worth County. Fletchall is a graduate of Worth County; she said that her favorite teachers were Kathy Miller, Carolyn Jones, and Clella Goodwin. She said that Ms. Goodwin was patient with students and that she had prepared her well for college and that she was good at finding different ways to teach her when she was having trouble. She said that Mrs. Jones, the business teacher, was good at working with her as an individual and helped her with an independent study course; she said that she was always fair and consistent with her students. Fletchall said that Mrs. Miller, her first grade teacher, would stay after school with her and stay inside with her during recess to help her get caught up with work.
Fletchall said that teachers have an amazing impact on children and that she had a lot of respect for them, something she would bring to the school board.
