Goodall Benefit Held at Northeast Nodaway

A benefit was held Friday night at Northeast Nodaway for Derek Goodall. His mother, Laura, is the elementary special education teacher at Northeast Nodaway. Derek is the oldest son of C.E. and Laura Goodall. Mrs. Goodall has been employed at Northeast Nodaway for 2 1/2 years. They have two other children.

On December 24, 2012 Derek became sick and his parents took him to Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph. He was admitted to ICU in critical condition; he became very sick very fast. He was put on a ventilator. Some of his organs shut down. He started receiving dialysis for his kidneys. He was diagnosed with a severe case of pancreatitis. They found a cyst near his pancreas and wanted to do surgery, but the surgeons believed it could be fatal if the cyst "leaked" out into his body. They wanted to wait for the cyst to build a wall around itself to help protect it. They are still waiting.

He was in ICU all but 4 days of the first month; then, he was transferred by life flight to Omaha Medical Center. He had taken a turn for the worse.

While in Omaha, they put in a tracheotomy and he remained on the ventilator. He was still in ICU there. The wall was not forming around the cyst as fast as expected, so they were transferred back to Heartland to wait. He has been back in Heartland for about 1 month. He is in the acute long term care on the 2nd floor.

They are currently waiting on the wall around the cyst to form so they can do surgery. They did a scan the first part of March and the wall is starting to form. They will do another scan the first part of April to see if the wall is big enough. If the wall is big enough, they will do surgery at the end of April. If not, they will continue to wait.

Mrs. Goodall and her husband have been by Derek's side since this all happened. He has not had a drink of water or a bite of food since his admission to the hospital in December. Damon has discontinued his studies at Columbia College in Columbia, MO to stay home and help out. Delane continues her high school studies in Maryville.

Benelli's, Casey's, Paglia's, and Pizza Hut all donated pizza. Karl Wilmes and Caleb Spire donated the doll shelf. Kevin Stoll donated the corner door shelf. The Northeast Nodaway Ag Department donated the wooden bluejay. The Northeast Nodaway FBLA donated the Bluejay bags and water glasses. The Northeast Nodaway students, teachers, PTO, parents, and community members all donated items, money, and time to the event.

At 5:30 that night, the concession stand opened with hot dogs, cheese pizza, pop, water, and popcorn. Basketball games were played by students from pre-K through 4th grade with games for the 5th through 12th grade as well. There were cake walks held in between games. At the conclusion of the event, a senior versus faculty game was held, with two members of the William Jewell men's basketball team joining the faculty. The seniors were spotted 111 points after they were able to raise $111 in one minute; however, the faculty got 50 points for every dunk that they got. The faculty came back and overcame their deficit to win the game. A 50/50 raffle was held and a silent auction was held for the corner door shelf, a doll house shelf, a wooden bluejay, cakes, and two family baskets.
