Food Pantry Demand Skyrockets

An MSNBC report on May 28th reported that food bank demand around the country has skyrocketed and that middle-income families who make too much income to qualify for food stamps are now having to get help to make ends meet. The report cited skyrocketing gas and energy prices as the reason for the surge in demand as well as job layoffs.
In Worth County, as in the rest of the country, Brenda Parman of Mission Possible said that food demand was high; demand there skyrocketed two years ago and has not gone back down. In addition, one of the largest one-day oil price jumps ever occurred Friday after Israel threatened to attack Iran for allegedly developing a nuclear weapons program. Israel destroyed Iraq’s nuclear facilities in 1980 because they said it could be used to make nuclear weapons.
The result has been long lines at food pantries around the country. In addition, school administrators report children are hoarding their school lunches so that they can feed siblings who don’t go to school yet.
