Vera (Hardy) Seat was born August 18th, 1913 to Jesse and Belle (Gray) Hardy at their farm home north of Grant City and departed this life on May 1, 2008 at her home in Grant City. She had two sisters, Vivian Grace and Virginia Wellenstein and two brothers, Charles and Donald. Her education was obtained at the Hass Rural School, Grant City High School, and Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville. She was a teacher at the Fletchall Rural School until her marriage on April 8, 1934 to Curtis N. Seat, after which she taught Sunday School classes until 2006.
She became a Christian on July 6th, 1934 at New Hope Baptist Church. In August of 1950, she and her husband moved their church membership to the Allendale Baptist Church, where they remained faithful until their deaths.
After eight years of marriage, they adopted daughter Mary Judith and two years later, son David. Judy was killed in 1969, leaving three children whom Curt and Vera helped raise to adulthood.
Curtis went home in July, 1981 after a long illness. They had lived 46 years on the place they called Hill Haven Farm raising their two children and making a home for numerous homeless persons along the way, some of whom lived at Hill Haven Farm for 17 years or so. After Curt’s death, Vera lived on the farm for several years, moving to Grant City in October 1989.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Curtis, daughter Judy, sister Virginia, and brother Charles.
She leaves to mourn a sister, Vivian Grace of Grant City, brother Don and wife Betty Hardy of South Conroe, TX, son David and wife Mary of Grant City and daughters Ellen Seat Jansen and husband Phil of Washington, IL, and Carla Seat, Des Moines.
She is also survived by granddaughter Julie Caldwell, Altoona, IA and children Jennie Hill and Josh Johnson with their children Braxton and Teagen Hill and Cooper Johnson; granddaughter Monica Peterson of Mount Ayr and daughter Mindy Stuart; and grandson Troy Caldwell, wife Kimberly of Willows, CA, and their son Kurtis, named after Troy’s grandfather Curt.
She is also survived by nieces and nephews Nancy Ulibarri and husband Frank of Blue Springs, MO; Teddee Grace of Phoenix; Pat Grace and wife Vera Jo of Tacoma; Mike Hardy and wife Janet of Porter, TX; Patty Loyal and husband Donnie of Kansas City; Leroy Seat and wife June of Liberty, MO; Ann Mueller and husband Dwight of Grant City; Carolyn Houts of Ghana, West Africa; and Lowell Houts and wife Pat of Grant City.
Also surviving are foster daughter Lynn King and husband Charles with children Charlene Ballantyne of Earlham, IA with their children Caleb and Georgia Ballantyne; Elaine King of Waynesville, MO; Kerra Drake and husband Eric of Blockton with their children Myranda, James, and Kaitlyn Drake; and Carl Brown, Harlan, IA with children Taylor and Lexus Brown.
In addition, many, many friends will miss her.
Funeral services were held at the Allendale Baptist Church in Allendale on Monday, May 5th, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Lowell Houts and Leroy Seat officiated. Interment was in New Hope Cemetery in Denver. Arrangements were under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home of Grant City.
