Summer School at Worth County

Students in grades 7-12 have the opportunity to attend summer school this summer at Worth County R-III. Plans are being made for a summer school to be held from Tuesday, May 27th through Friday, June 27th, 2008. Classes will be held each Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. Classes will be held on Fridays. The school plans to run busses and offer breakfast and lunch like they do during the regular school year. A grant has been written to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students offering summer school.
The cost of the summer school will be covered by state aid.
Students who will be in high school for the 2008-2009 term will be allowed to take two courses. One course will be taught from 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. The second course will last from 11:30 a.m. - 3:20 p.m., including time allotted for lunch. High school students may receive one half of a unit of credit for each course completed satisfactorily. In other words, they could receive one unit of credit during the summer school. The credits and grades would count towards the graduation requirements and grade point average. The overall attendance incentive offered by Newton Summer Adventure will also be granted with the Worth County summer school.
Seventh grade students may take two courses with the same timeline as high school students. Their grades will count, but they will not receive credits towards graduation.
A list of possible courses has been devised. Students have been surveyed to narrow the list. A registration sheet has been sent for each student who displayed an interest in summer school. If you do not receive registration information for summer school, contact the school. Each registration sheet is due back ASAP.
Parents are asked to sit down with their children to determine if they want them to take courses this summer. Should one have questions about summer school, those questions may be addressed to Mr. Healy. Questions on the curriculum of a particular course should be addressed to the individual teacher.
The courses were selected to help students gain additional work on the basics as well as provide enrichment courses. The environment will include smaller classes than usual, with increased individual attention. One will find that many courses are interesting, fun, and beneficial to all. Courses range from Rewind (Language Arts review) to Memories (Capture Memories on Computer), Plato Math & Science, Social Studies Survival, War Games, and Play On!!! (Drama). Summer school should be a great opportunity to learn material that one has difficulty fitting into a regular schedule.
Many students and their parents will see summer school as an opportunity. Please consider summer school as an option for your child.
