Opinion: Time to End a Tradition

"Eight Belles," the #5 horse that had to be euthanized after running 2nd in the Kentucky Derby after breaking both legs and collapsing right after crossing the finish line, is proof positive that artificial racing surfaces that many tracks are using is necessary for the well-being of the animals today. The weight of the horse and the long distance, 1 ¼ miles of the race, contribute to the pounding and stress over that distance to the horses ankles and legs on the dirt track.
The cushion track, or artificial racing surface, is much safer and humane to the powerful animals!
In recent years, there have been many, many leg and ankle injuries at the Kentucky Derby. I know it is tradition to run for the roses on the first, but in my opinion, I’d like to see the rubberized surface at Churchill.
