Anna Gladstone Gets Walkoff Hit Again as Tigers Complete Sweep

Worth County had won the King City Tournament by virtue of winning the tiebreaker over Hardin-Central, but they managed to complete the sweep and beat King City 4-3 in the nightcap as Anna Gladstone once again got the walkoff hit. It was her third career walkoff hit; two of them were on the same field and against the same team in King City. The other was against Stanberry earlier this year.

King City, which came into the game winless, lost their fourth straight late-inning game. Against Albany Thursday, they jumped on the Warriors 4-0 and led the whole way until Albany scored two runs off a wild pitch to win 7-6. Against the dangerous hitting South Holt squad, they led 12-3 going into the last inning, only for South Holt to score ten in the last inning to win 13-12. Against Hardin-Central, they took a 3-1 lead into the fifth, only for Hardin-Central to come back and pound the ball hard in the late innings to win 8-4.

The Wildkats jumped on Worth County early when their first four batters reached on three hits and an error to go up 2-0. Nobody else scored, and the lead stood up until the fourth inning. Anna Gladstone was twice robbed of a big hit; the first time, she hit a screamer right at right fielder Hallie Washburn, and the second time, another one right at third baseman Hollie Washburn.

The lead threatened to grow in the fourth when Hallie Washburn reached on a bobble from pitcher Ali Brown and Kamdyn Carlson reached on an error from Allison Larison before Brown settled down and struck out Sydney Overmann to end the inning.

Worth County finally got one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Cassavaugh reached on an error when shortstop Kelcie Catlett threw away her grounder, allowing Cassavaugh to take second. She took third on a passed ball and then Merrideth Spiers had an epic at-bat, fouling off nine of pitcher Emberlyn Medsker’s pitches before finally getting a pop fly single down the left field line to score Cassavaugh. That made it 2-1.

It looked like Worth County’s best efforts would come up short and King City would get their first win, but then Jill Hardy doubled down the right field line with one out in the sixth. Anna Spainhower struck out, but with Worth County down to their final out due to the time limit, Megan Cassavaugh reached on an error on a grounder under Catlett’s legs to bring home Hardy and tie the game at 2-2.
Since time had expired, the game went to the International Tiebreaker, with the person who made the last out taking second to start each inning. Kamdyn Carlson grounded out to advance Hallie Washburn to third, and then Sydney Overmann walked and stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.

It looked like Worth County was once again in a tight spot, but Taryn Hunter’s single only brought one run home as Hunter took second on the throw to third. But then Victoria Washburn popped out to Jill Hardy at short and Kristen Butrum flied out to Braidy Hunt to keep Worth County’s deficit at 4-3.

Worth County had lost an International Tiebreaker game two years ago in Eagleville against Princeton, but this time, with two strikes on her, Hailey Adwell crushed a double down the right field line and went to third on the unsuccessful throw home as Braidy Hunt scored. Aivry Griffin struck out, but Anna Gladstone picked her up. Anna had been robbed twice earlier in the game, but not when it counted; she dropped a line drive just over the outstretched shortstop’s glove for the game-winning base hit.

Tiger Softball Clinches King City Tourney With Wild Win Over Hardin-Central

Worth County came from behind to get a wild 14-10 win over Hardin-Central and clinch the King City Tournament Saturday in their second game. The King City game would not have affected the outcome, since Worth County got the head to head tiebreak with the Bulldogs. King City had lost to both Hardin-Central and South Holt.

Hardin-Central had come in with only one loss, and had beaten King City and South Holt in earlier action Saturday.

First, it looked like Worth County would have an easy time at it. With one out, Anna Gladstone singled and stole second and third. Megan Cassavaugh struck out, but then Worth County put together singles from Merrideth Spiers and Jill Hardy and a double from Hailey Adwell to make it 3-0.

But then Hardin-Central struck back as Daylea Shaner doubled, Brogan DeMint singled and went to second on an error, and Carly Thacker singled her home to cut Worth County’s lead to 3-2.

And then all hell threatened to break loose in the second as pitcher Braidy Hunt began fighting the strike zone. Chloe Bowman walked, stole second, stole third, and came home when Worth County threw it around. Gracie Gibson walked and stole. Rachel White struck out, but Shaner hit a slow roller up the middle that nobody had a play on and stole second.

Brogan DeMint hit a grounder to pitcher Braidy Hunt, who threw to third to pick off Gibson, but threw wildly, putting runners on second and third and bringing another run home. Izabella Anderson walked and Carly Thacker singled to drive in two. Alexis Yockel singled to drive in two more before Worth County finally got out of the inning. When the dust had settled, Worth County was down 8-3 and looked like they had nothing to live for.

The first four runners for Worth County reached safely in the third to give them a glimmer of hope. Merrideth Spiers singled, Jill Hardy walked, Hailey Adwell singled, and Morgan Beagle provided a big blow, a two-run single to right to make the deficit more manageable at 8-5. Braidy Hunt hit a pop fly down the right field line that second baseman Brogan DeMint got to, but Hailey Adwell alertly tagged up and scored on the play. Anna Spainhower, returning from an illness, singled to left to make it 8-7.

Hunt finally set down the Bulldogs in order, and consecutive hit batters for Worth County in the fourth opened the floodgates again, Jill Hardy singled to score Megan Cassavaugh and took second on left fielder Chloe Bowman’s bobble as Merrideth Spiers was safe at third. Hailey Adwell walked and Morgan Beagle reached on Alexis Yockel’s error at third as she tried to hurry a throw home and bobbled it. Jill Hardy scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-8.

Abby McNelly replaced Mackenzie Smith on the mound and struck out Braidy Hunt, but Merrideth Spiers singled and went to second on a throw to third. Aivry Griffin grounded to short and Cassavaugh was cut down at the plate for the second out, but Anna Gladstone hit a grounder to Anderson at short, who didn’t realize there were two outs and threw away a throw home as Anna took second and Aivry Griffin third. Megan Cassavaugh reached on a dropped fly ball as two more runs scored to make it 14-8.

Carly Thacker’s two run home run in the fourth cut it to 14-10, and had she made it back up in the fifth, things would have gotten interesting. Mackenzie Smith doubled into the left center gap to start the inning. Rachel White and Daylea Shaner struck out, but Brogan DeMint kept the game alive with a walk. This was the last inning, since time had expired. Izabella Anderson came up, and Thacker was on the on-deck circle, but Anderson’s drive to the wall in right was caught by Hailey Adwell to end the game.

Food Ordinance Proposed for Worth County

County EMD/Economic Developer Gene Auten reported that they had made progress on cleaning up the heli-pad site. They have also made some progress on tearing down the house on Pleasant St
County Road and Bridge foreman Jim Fletchall requested and received approval for tires for the MAC truck.

–Will need to use excavator to finish the house project on Pleasant St.
–The crew cleaned up the heli-pad site and gained several loads of rip rap.
–Discussed the brush issue on CR 232/129th Trail.
–Fletchall reported that the clutch went out of Wieland’s truck, so that will slow up rock hauling.

Tri County Health representative Carrie Redden came to discuss a food ordinance for all food establishments in the county. Right now the Tri County Health department inspects all food establishments in the county, but they really don’t have any authority to close down a place that repeatedly ignores their recommendations. With the Ordinance in place the Tri County Health group would then have the authority to close down an establishment that didn’t comply with routine inspections. This ordinance would require all food establishments to pay a yearly fee to the Tri-County Health department. No action was taken at this time.

Sue Jackson from the CENSUS Bureau stopped in to inform the commissioners of the latest updates in the CENSUS process. She hopes to find local events to have representatives to set up a booth to get the information out to the public.  The bureau will start sending out packets during the month of March, 2020. April 1st, 2020 is CENSUS day.  Between now and then the workers will be in the area checking address and making sure someone lives at each address.  They will also be looking for local people to fill these positions. 

Jerri Dearmont from Regional Council of Governments stopped by with some paper work for Presiding Commissioner Jubal Summers to sign.

The commissioners, and Jerri, called in for a conference call with the Workforce Development Board at 11:15.

Late Notice -- J.K. Runyon

J.K. Runyon, 80, Maryville, Missouri, formerly of Sheridan, Missouri passed away September 15, 2019 at his home.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the Sheridan Christian Church, with a luncheon to follow. Inurnment will follow the luncheon in the Isadora Cemetery near Grant City.

Arrangements are under direction of Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Missouri.

NEN Band, Color Guard to Help With Breakfast Sunday

The NEN Band and Color Guard will be helping with the Ravenwood Community Breakfast this Sunday, September 22nd. They both performed at the Ravenwood Community Festival earlier this month, and they will be performing at band contests around the area this year. It will be in the community building from 8 am to 12 noon. Pancakes, sausages, and biscuits and gravy will be served, along with drinks.

Ashlynn Gilpatrick Tosses Three-Hitter as Shamrocks Beat Milan

Ashlynn Gilpatrick shut down Cadence Pauley and the Milan Wildcats last Tuesday and North Harrison got a 6-1 win as they successfully invaded Milan. Gilpatrick, who gave up two home runs to Pauley last year, kept it in the yard, limiting her to two doubles and the rest of the team to just one as she was able to use her riser and her heater to good effect. Meanwhile, North Harrison chipped away, getting 10 hits in the win.

Kami Gibson got a single and a double in the win. Camden Castleberry, Rainey Fordyce, and Jayliegh Robins all got two hits. Emma Craig got a double and Trendi Johnson a single.

There was a bizarre play in the sixth. With Pauley on third, the next batter grounded to the infield and first baseman Hunter Stevens, seeing Pauley break home, pulled off the bag and threw unsuccessfully as Milan’s lone run crossed the plate. Meanwhile, the other runner, thinking she was out, came across the plate and North Harrison alertly threw to catcher Kami Gibson, who tagged her out. After a long conference, the umpires ruled that since it was still a live ball, the out stood.

The JV won the nightcap 9-4.

Shamrocks Fall Short After 7th Inning Fireworks

North Harrison fell short 10-8 against powerhouse Lathrop in a game in which the teams battled to a 5-5 draw through the first six innings. In the seventh, the Mules scored five in the top of the inning, while North Harrison scored three in the bottom of the inning to come up two runs short. “I don’t mind a loss like this if we can take something from it,” said coach Brandon Craig. “Our at-bats got better as the game progressed.”

A collision led to an error in the seventh, which led to two runs, while a lost fly ball led to two more. On the other end, the Shamrocks had runners on second and third with nobody out in the first, only for Emma Craig to hit a screamer right at the third baseman, who was standing on the bag and got a double play. It was one of those games in which North Harrison was up to the challenge of playing a powerhouse team, but couldn’t catch the breaks that they needed.

Jayliegh Robins had two singles for the Shamrocks. Ashlynn Gilpatrick had a double, while Kami Gibson, Hunter Stevens, Camden Castleberry, and Rainey Fordyce all had singles. Robins’ second hit could have gone for extra bases and emptied them had not the center fielder sacrificed her body to stop the ball and keep her to a single.

The JV won 11-5 in the nightcap.
