Tigers Overcome Slow Start to Drop Orrick 56-8

Worth County overcame a slow start to drop Orrick 56-8 Friday and remain unbeaten while dropping the Bearcats from the ranks of the unbeaten. They overcame two lost fumbles, a huge Bearcat line, and runningback Blake Buchanan as they pulled away for the win.

The fumble bug that plagued them against King City plagued them again against Orrick as on the first play of the game, Levi Cassavaugh took a short pass for a nice gain, only to put it on the ground at the 21. Orrick couldn't do anything with it as they were stifled by a holding penalty, and Worth County got a good runback to the Orrick 35 on the ensuing punt by Alex Rinehart. Rinehart lost one on the first play, but then got good blocking up front and picked up 17 to the 19. Aydan Gladstone picked up seven more to the 12, getting blocking from Creed Wilcox, Dylan Wilmes, Levi Cassavaugh, and Jackson Runde. A holding penalty wiped out a potential score, but then Gladstone did a play action fake that fooled everyone and he threw a strike to an unguarded Dylan McIntyre for a score with 8:21 left. Alex Rinehart added the extra point pass to make it 8-0.

Dylan McIntyre had a sack on first down to force another three and out, and Jace Latham blocked the ensuing punt to give the Tigers good field position on the Orrick 38. Jackson Runde made a diving grab on the three after his defender fell, but Orrick blitzed, shot through, and recovered a fumble at the 7. Orrick looked like they were finding their footing, converting a fourth and one for a first down to their own 21. An 11 yard pass from Zander Stevinson to Chanler Woods covered 11 yards to the 31, and a defensive holding penalty put it on the 39. But a block in the back penalty killed the drive.

A block in the back penalty on the Tigers, which was committed while the ball was in the air, turned out costly as it wiped out a long Rinehart runback and put the ball at the 8. There were offsetting penalties on the play, so the ball was placed at the spot where he caught it. That only made things more interesting, as after Levi Cassavaugh picked up eight more to the 14, Rinehart broke tackle after tackle on the next play, starting off down the right side and working his way down the left before being tackled at the Orrick 2. Levi Cassavaugh ran it in for the score, and Rinehart caught the pass to make it 16-0 with 11:42 left in the second.

Blake Buchanan picked up two yards on the first play after Orrick started on the 15, but Tanner Ridge and Braxton Hightshoe met Stevinson for a loss of two. Aydan Gladstone broke up a third down pass, and Orrick was forced to punt. A shanked kick gave Worth County a short field at the Orrick 31. They almost squandered their chance as a dropped pass and a false start gave them third and 16 at the 36. But Alex Rinehart picked up 10 to the 26 and Levi Cassavaugh ran the power sweep 15 yards to the 11. The Bearcats had a huge front line, but the Tigers were able to work the edges all night long. Aydan Gladstone threw a strike to Dylan McIntyre for a score with 8:24 left to make it 22-0. Worth County only needed five seconds to tack on another touchdown; after Orrick got the ball back at the 15, a bad snap sailed into the end zone and Aydan Gladstone outran everyone to the ball for a touchdown with 8:19 left. Levi Cassavaugh ran in the extra points to make it 30-0.

Buchanan threw a short pass to Woods for 11 to the 33, but on the next play, Jace Latham body slammed Buchanan straight out of the WWE, and knocked the wind out of him. It didn't matter at first, as Orrick ran with Jaxon Miller behind their big line into Tiger territory and a carry from Stevinson got them down to the 22. But on the next play, Dylan Wilmes recovered a fumble at the Tiger 21 to kill the drive.

Alex Rinehart took a power sweep eight yards to the 29, and then Gladstone threw a strike to Dylan McIntyre for 25 yards to the 26. Two running plays went for five yards to the 21, and then Rinehart got a block from Levi Cassavaugh and took it 15 yards to the 6. Gladstone then threw a strike to Runde for a score with 2:14 left to make it 36-0.

Orrick tried to march down the field and get a score before halftime, as Miller carried part of the load and Buchanan came back in as well. They got as far as the Tiger 18, but then took a shot into the end zone and Aydan Gladstone picked it off to give the Tigers the ball back with 34 seconds left. That turned out to be enough time as Levi Cassavaugh took a hook and ladder to the 24, then Aydan Gladstone scrambled for 24 yards to the Orrick 32 and Worth County took its final timeout with 10 seconds left. The line gave Gladstone an eternity and he threw a strike to Rinehart in the end zone as time expired and Dylan McIntyre caught the extra point pass to make it 44-0 at halftime.

The Bearcats got the ball to start the second half, and converted a fourth and three at their own 29 with a four yard run by Stevinson to the 37. The Tigers stiffened up, and forced a fourth and seven at the 36. Stevinson came under a heavy rush as both Levi Cassavaugh and Dawson Vore pressured him, and he threw it away. They only needed one play to score as Alex Rinehart got a block from Creed Wilcox and took it to the house with 8:29 left to make it 50-0.

Orrick finally got a score; aided by a roughing the passer penalty, they got a first down at the Tiger 39. Stevinson converted a fourth and one with a two yard run to the 28, Miller converted a third and four with a seven yard run to the 15, Buchanan took it 13 yards to the two, and two plays later, a fumble into the end zone was recovered by Orrick for a score with 1:20 left in the third. Chanler Woods caught the extra point pass to make it 50-8.

Worth County only needed two plays to answer after getting the ball on their own 31. Levi Cassavaugh took it two yards to the 33, and then Alex Rinehart started down the left side and bounced it out to the right and outran everyone to take it to the house with 16 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 56-8 and go over the 200 yard mark.

The Tigers were content to give their reserves some reps on offense while holding strong defensively. They killed one drive at the Tiger 19 when Tyler New rung Buchanan's bell, and then Stevinson came under a heavy rush to a blitzing Braxton Hightshoe, tried to dump it off to Woods, only for Dawson Vore to drop him for a loss of three. They stopped Orrick at the 18 on another drive when Tanner Ridge and Braxton Hightshoe dropped Stevinson for a loss of four to set up fourth and nine at the 22; they tried to run with Buchanan, but he could only make up three and the Tigers were able to run out the clock.

Alex Rinehart had 10 carries for 213 yards. Aydan Gladstone had two carries for 31, while Levi Cassavaugh had 5 carries for 26 yards. Aydan Gladstone completed 8 out of 9 passes for 162 yards. Dylan McIntyre had 3 catches for 56 yards, Jackson Runde 2 carries for 41 yards, Levi Cassavaugh 2 catches for 32 yards, and Alex Rinehart 1 catch for 31 yards. Worth County had 31 plays go for 436 yards.

Orrick had nearly twice as many plays, 61, but only had 184 yards to show for it. Blake Buchanan had 25 carries for 71 yards, while Jaxon Miller had 13 carries for 60 yards.
