Worth County's junior high hung five runs on Northeast Nodaway and held on for an 8-4 win Monday as they clinched their third straight winning season under the guidance of Cody Green. They are at 8-4 and only have two games remaining.
They won their first four games, hit a rough stretch where they lost four of five, but then recovered to win their last three. In the first inning, after Rylee Ruckman scored on a steal and a throwing error, Keira Hardy reached on a dropped third strike. Katie Fletchall then hit a blast to the left field wall and circled the bases before the blue shirts could get the ball in to make it 3-0. Rayleigh Smith hit a hard shot off the bag at third for a base hit, stole second, and took third on a wild pitch. Addison Gray reached on a dropped third strike and took second on a throwing error as Smith came home to make it 4-0. Kambree Briner singled to left to score Gray.
The Bluejays have had a tough luck season this year, only winning two games, but making every game interesting at the end. With two outs, Brianna Meyer doubled to the wall in left to plate Blair Nelson and Mylee Wilmes to make it 5-2. Meyer took third on a wild pitch and Hayley Yost was hit by a pitch. But she went to second on a first and second, Worth County did the snap throw to short play, and shortstop Keira Hardy nailed Meyer trying to score to get out of the inning.
Arenna Galanakis was hit to start the second inning and Alivia Moyer (running for Galanakis) stole second. Summer Riley was called out on strikes, but then Rylee Ruckman beat out a grounder to third to move Moyer to third. She stole second and Keira Hardy singled up the middle and stole second. Kristen Tracy singled to score Hardy to make it 8-2.
Tiger pitcher Kristen Tracy fought the strike zone in the second and hit two batters and walked the next to load the bases. But she settled down and Worth County traded some runs for outs with the six run lead as Ashlynn Kennard grounded into a force at second. Kennard was thrown out stealing as Nevaeh Jacoby took home on the play to cut it to 8-4, but Shyann Garnett was called out on strikes to end the inning.
Tracy settled down and shut down the Bluejays in the third to preserve the win.
