Worth County's junior high squad beat Stanberry 77-0 Monday to complete an unbeaten season. This was one of the most lopsided seasons for the junior high in recent memory, as they outscored their opponents by a combined 327-26 in their six games. Four of their wins were by shutout, and four of them were over the 45 point margin. Their closest game this year was 32 points, against Bedford in the second game of the year.
Dan Collins, who had coached many years for Stanberry, treated it like any other game. Stanberry showed little resemblance to the hard-hitting teams of recent years; they had only 11 players dressed out for the game. They didn't get their first first down until well into the second half, and never crossed into Tiger territory.
Worth County forced a three and out to start the game, and the carnage started right away as Ethan Lininger blocked the punt and Worth County got the ball on the Stanberry 10. They only needed one play to convert as Brayden Stevens took an option 10 yards, getting a block from Bo Collins to get the score with 6:26 left. Collins kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.
Jaren Stoll nearly returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but got stripped of the ball and Caleb New recovered it at the Stanberry 32. Once again, Worth County only needed one play to score as Stevens got blocks from Bo Collins and Franklin Hoff, hurdled a defender, and took it to the house with 6:09 left. The ensuing extra point snap was fumbled, but Stevens picked it up and ran it in to make it 15-0.
Andrew Griffin's kick sailed over the Stanberry backs' heads and they were buried at the six. On third and nine, the quarterback came under a heavy rush and Ethan Lininger got a pick six with 4:29 left to put Worth County up 21-0.
On their first play from scrimmage, Stanberry fumbled the slick ball and Sawyer Thurman recovered it at the Bulldog 25. On the first play from scrimmage, Brayden Stevens aired it out to Bo Collins. The ball was underthrown, but Collins came back and got it and took it to the house with 4:13 left to make it 27-0.
The ensuing kick died in the wet grass at the Stanberry 23, and Bo Collins beat everyone to the ball. Stevens threw a pitch to Collins, who threw back to Stevens who picked up nine to the 14. On the next play, Stevens took a spread draw to the house with 3:46 left after getting a block from Brayden Murphy. Brayden Combs ran in the extra points after getting a block from Franklin Hoff to make it 35-0.
On the ensuing possession, Stanberry went three and out and the snap sailed out of the back of the end zone for a safety to put Worth County up 37-0 with 1:31 left. Brayden Stevens ran back the ensuing kickoff to the Stanberry 15, and then Bo Collins caught a screen pass for a score with 1:08 left. Dylan Smith ran in the extra points to make it 45-0.
Ethan Lininger got his second punt block and Worth County had another short field at the Stanberry 35. Two holding penalties drove Worth County back to their own 35. Caleb New got 14 yards back in two tries to the Stanberry 31, and then Brayden Stevens fooled everyone as he took a counter and dragged two defenders the last ten yards to the house with 5:11 left in the second. Reece Gray ran in the extra points to make it 53-0.
Once again, Stanberry was forced to punt and Brayden Stevens ran it back to the Stanberry 27. A facemask penalty put the ball on the 12. A fumble put the Tigers back to the 16 and then Franklin Hoff was seemingly stood up at the line of scrimmage. But he somehow broke free and took it to the house with 1:31 left to make it 59-0 at the half.
For some reason, Stanberry elected to play on, and Brayden Stevens ran back the second half kickoff back to the Stanberry 15. From there, Cole Ruby took it to the house with 7:37 left to make it 65-0.
Worth County was subbing freely at that point, and Stanberry tried to go for it on fourth and five at their own 28. But they were stopped three yards short at the 30. Two plays later, Brayden Murphy got a turn at carrying and showed some skill, getting a block from Bo Collins and bouncing it out from the 29 to the 3. From there, Hayden Sanders took the option, ran into a wall, but somehow got a chest pass away to Cole Ruby, who took it to the house with 2:24 left to make it 71-0.
Stanberry tried to go for it again on fourth and four from their own 28 and dropped back to pass, but Lance Runde shot through and got the sack to give Worth County the ball at the Stanberry 20. They only needed one play to score as Lucas Frisch took a quick hitter to the house with 7:10 left to make it 77-0. Stanberry finally got a first down and penetrated to their own 37, only to be driven back by a holding penalty and forced to punt. As time wound down, Reed Smyser and Toryn Privett shot through for Worth County's third punt block of the day for icing on the cake.
