Casi Joy Lives Up to Billing in First Night of Horse Show; Donna Carmichael Recognized for Being Queen in 1948

Casi Joy lived up to her billing Thursday night in Pickering; true to her last name, she put on a joyful performance in which she knew a little bit of everything. She did everything from Patsy Cline to Classic Rock artists such as Tom Petty to recent artists such as Taylor Swift and “Uptown Funk.” She could yodel as fast as anyone, and she could belt out Johnny Cash. The City of Pickering was safe from alien attacks, for anyone who has watched the movie “Mars Attacks,” in which an invasion of Martians is finally stopped by an old lady playing yodeling music.

Donna Carmichael, long time Nodaway County Circuit Clerk & Recorder, was recognized at the show; she had been Pickering Horse Show Queen back in 1948, 70 years ago. Back then, the show was held north of where the school is today. She was a 1950 graduate of Pickering High School and her favorite teacher was Mrs. Hardy, a long-time English teacher at the school.

Casi has been singing since she was five years old and said she has no plans to stop; she was fresh off a 12-day tour of Minnesota. She splits her time between Smithville, where she was born and raised, and Nashville. She was noticed when one of her early music videos went viral, and when she was noticed by someone in Nashville.

She not only covers other peoples’ work; she writes her own songs as well, including one which she kept under wraps until her wedding day, when she sprung it on her surprised husband, family and wedding guests.
