Elizabeth Betts Leaves North Harrison for Maysville; Final Concert Held as Many Awards Handed Out

Elizabeth Betts, the music teacher who built the North Harrison music program up from scratch, had her farewell concert Wednesday as she will leave the school for Maysville. There were many stories, awards, and musical pieces played; although Betts had asked for no tears, there were a few students holding them back.

For the fifth graders, Owen Robertson got the Crescendo award, given by Betts to the most improved musician. Three different fifth graders got “2” ratings and three more got “1” ratings. Mike McIntosh got the Crescendo award for the sixth graders. Four of them got a “2” rating and five got a “1” rating.

For the high school choir, Cheyenne Peterson got the “Growth” award. Addie Slaughter got the National Choral Award. Lola Breshears got the Directors Spotlight Award. For the band, Naomi Thomsen got the “Crescendo” award. Mardee Sadowsky got the Mackey Award. Ashlynn Gilpatrick got the Directors Award. Hannah Whitmire got the “Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.” Mardee Sadowsky was recognized for making the National FFA Band. Getting “Gold” medals at state were Collin Briggs along with Mardee Sadowsky. Audrey Briggs, who is going to Graceland on a music scholarship, got the John Philip Sousa Award and got to conduct the band during one of their pieces.
Ms. Betts may be going on to bigger and better things, but the music program will live on. The pie auction held last winter helped raise funds for eight students from the music program to go to camp this summer.
