Merrideth Spiers Breaks 40 Foot Barrier in Shot Put; Girls Run Away at Tarkio

Merrideth Spiers broke the 40 foot barrier at the Tarkio Relays as Worth County’s girls ran away with the meet at Tarkio last Tuesday. The school record for varsity is 39 feet, held by Megan Walker. The varsity athletes use a bigger shot put than the junior high, but Spiers’ performance in Tarkio was still impressive; it was good enough to beat the boys as well. Worth County used strong performances in the throwing events as well as across the board to run away with the meet. The boys were edged out by Mound City and took second.

The girls posted 142 team points to win the event, followed by East Atchison with 94 and Rock Port with 85.50. On the boys side, Mound City won with 96.50, followed by Worth County with 90 and East Atchison with 86. Rock Port had 57.50.

Anna Gladstone was second in both the 100. She was second to Marisa Carder in the 100, getting 14.35 to Carder’s 13.37. She was also second to Carder in the 200, getting 29.75 to Carder’s 28.81.

Hannah McElvain was sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:16.45.

Braidy Hunt won the 800 with a time of 2:48.40.

Kristin New was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 6:40.37.

Anna Gladstone was pushed in the 100 Hurdles by Hannah Huffman (North Andrew), but she won with a time of 18.17 to Huffman’s 18.52. Jill Hardy was third with a time of 19.14.

Worth County placed second or better in all their relay events. The 4x100 was second with a time of 58.94; the 4x200 was second with a time of 2:06.23, and the 4x400 won with a time of 4:50.77.
Anna Spainhower was fifth in the High Jump with a height of 4’2”.

Regan Allee won the Pole Vault with a height of 7’6”. Keelin Engel was third with a height of 7 feet.
Anna Gladstone won her second event of the afternoon in the Long Jump, where she won with a jump of 14 feet.

Kristin New was second in the Triple Jump with a jump of 27’6½”.

Merrideth Spiers’ winning throw in the Shot Put was 40’1½”. Kaylee McElvain was second with a throw of 33’3¾”. Spiers also won the Discus with a throw of 104’7”, almost 20 feet ahead of her nearest competitor. Kaylee McElvain was fourth with a throw of 75’9½”.

On the boys side, Andrew Alarcon was fourth in the 100 with a time of 13.56.

Daniel Craven was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:58.19.

The boys placed two in the 100 Hurdles. Jaxon Anderson was fourth with a time of 17.78 while Lucky Gladstone was fifth with a time of 18.03.

The boys were second in the 4x100 with a time of 54.92, first in the 4x200 with a time of 1:52.61, and second in the 4x400 with a time of 4:23.98.

Lucky Gladstone was third in the High Jump with a leap of 4’10”.

The boys were 1-2 in the Pole Vault. Nate Adwell won with a height of 9’6”. Daniel Craven was second with a height of 8’6”.

Andrew Alarcon was third in the Long Jump with a leap of 14’4½”. Zayne Swope was sixth with a jump of 12’7½”.

The boys placed two in the Triple Jump. Jaxon Anderson was third with a jump of 33’6”, while Wyatt Latham was sixth with a jump of 28’3”.

Latham was third in the Shot Put with a throw of 34’5¾” and third in the Discus with a throw of 102’7”.
