Sam Graves' statement on the retirement of Mel Tjeerdsma

U.S. Congressman Sam Graves issued the following statement on Mel Tjeerdsma’s retirement from Northwest Missouri State University.

"Today is a bittersweet day in Maryville. For the last 17 years, Bearcat fans have watched Mel Tjeerdsma build Northwest into one of the best college football programs in the country. His on the field record of success will be difficult, if not impossible, to match. "

Coach Tjeerdsma is known around Northwest Missouri and college football as a man of integrity and class. The positive impact he has had on the lives of thousands of student-athletes may be his biggest legacy. Today, hundreds of coaches are still teaching youngsters the important lessons about sports and life they first learned from Mel Tjeerdsma.

Like so many Bearcat fans, I congratulate Mel Tjeerdsma on a phenomenal job and wish him, and his wife Carol, well in retirement."
