Gov. Jay Nixon championed for the state's A+ college scholarship program Monday (Jan. 24) in St. Louis, encouraging lawmakers to pass legislation that would make the program available to students in every school across Missouri.
It was one of several media events across the state held by the governor to promote the program after his State of the State address, when he called upon legislators to expand the program.
"For too long, too many excellent Missouri high school students have been unable to get A-Plus scholarships, through no fault of their own, simply because their schools weren't designated as A-Plus schools," Nixon said. "That's just not fair. And it needs to change."
While proposing an $8 million increase in the A+ program, his budget also recommends a $48 million cut in appropriations for the Access Missouri program, which provides financial assistance to college students.
